I am not sure how to reply All so I hope everyone who posted gets to see this. I am extremely grateful to everyone who responded. I have been trying to get an answer to this question for 15 yrs, each dr. says I am in range and refuses to treat my thyroid but personally I have always thought there was sth wrong. I am a careful eater, do exercise even if not constantly, (I have tried that too) does not work. I am almost moved to tears to see some of these responses, I feel vindicated. I live in NY and have seen several specialists to no avail. At least I feel armed now with real information. The new specialist may even take me seriously, she ran the current tests we will see.
ChickenLady advised I get these other tests. CL the new specialist ran them, I think you are probably right about leaky gut, I am already gluten intolerant, here are the results what do you think
Iron Total 86 40- 190mcg/dl
Iron binding 281 250 - 450mcg/dl (calc)
% satauration 31 11- 50%
Ferritin 86 10 -232 mg/ml
Vitamin D 25- OH Total , IA 31 30 -100ng/ml
Thanks again everyone I am beyond grateful for you and this community

Thanks for the acknowledgement FerryMan. I think HU is a brilliant forum for helping patients to get informed and share their knowledge and experience. Without it I would still be floundering within the NHS who repeatedly told me all my test results were 'normal - no action' - when in fact I was barely scraping the bottom of the ranges for various hormone and vitamin levels - and feeling dreadfully unwell. This forum has helped me to pursue a private route which has left me feeling so much better, and better informed. Wishing you lots of luck - hoping this forum will be the stepping stone to better health for you as it has been for me...
Total iron - I'm assuming this is the same as serum iron but if I'm wrong then my interpretation will be meaningless for this test.
Serum iron
• 55 to 70% of the range
• higher end for men
Your Total Iron is 30% of the way through the range, so is too low. You would ideally have a level of around 122.5 - 145, preferably towards the higher end of that range.
.
Iron binding capacity
• Low in range indicates lack of capacity for additional iron
• High in range indicates body's need for supplemental iron
281 250 - 450mcg/dl
Yours is quite low in range, which suggests your body can't cope with much more iron. This might be because of an inflammation or an infection problem.
.
% saturation
• optimal is 35 to 45%
• higher end for men
% satauration 31 11- 50%
Your blood is not optimally saturated with iron, suggesting that you could increase your iron level. But this conflicts with your iron binding capacity result. Mixed messages from iron results are quite common, but it makes it hard to know what to do about it!
.
Ferritin
• Low level virtually always indicates need for iron supplementation
• High level with low serum iron/low saturation indicates inflammation
or infection
• High level with high serum iron and low TIBC indicates excess iron
• Over range with saturation above 45% suggests hemochromatosis
Ferritin 86 10 -232 mg/ml
Your ferritin is 34% of the way through the range. On this forum it is usually suggested that people get their ferritin to roughly mid-range or a little over, so about 121 with the range you've supplied. Your result is not dramatically bad compared to some we see.

My suggestion with these results is that you don't supplement iron, but that instead you eat more iron from food sources. Liver is a high iron food, and eating it once a week improves iron levels for many of the people on this forum. A maximum of 200 grams per week is suggested because liver has high levels of vitamin A in it. You could try it for a few weeks then re-test. Leave off eating iron-rich foods for a week before re-testing. A useful list of iron-rich foods can be found here :
