Your FT4 and FT3 are much too high, and your TSH very low, so that means you are hyperthyroid - over-active thyroid - probably Grave's.
The normal treatment is anti-thyroid drugs to bring the Free levels down.
Been admitted twice to hospital taking the anti thiyroid drugs they are not working because I cannot keep them down..I have colitis and I'm sure these drugs are affecting my stomach and bowl as I had no problem with my bowls or stomach before going on them..I had an uptake scan yesterday to see how my thyroid is performing..I'm hoping I can get surgery to remove the thiyroid as I have endured 6 months of sheer hell..if anti thiyroid drugs don't work what's the alternative..
Many thanks
Karen
I'm afraid I don't know. I'm not hyper. I just wanted you to have a quick answer until the experts come along.
You are clearly hyperthyoid as you know. Hyperthyroidism causes diarrhoea. Have you taking any other drugs that might have caused your colitis? NSAIDs (painkillers) can lead to colitis.
You have been hyper for a long time and quite severe. Hyperthyroidism causes anxiety and it is quite possible that this is causing your vomiting when taking anti-thyroid drugs. The ones you have been given are quite different and so it is very unlikely both are making you vomit when other medicines do not. I would suggest you try taking the anti-thyroid drugs in different ways, to find a way you can take them. Perhaps take a tiny bit at a time spread through the day or with food. It's more likely to be a response induced by years of hyperthyroidism (and awful care) than a response to any ingredient.
I have a real problem with antibiotics and was hospitalized in 2015 they could not keep the antibiotic in me even when it was given intravenous ..the consultant gave up after 4 types were tried on me..the same appears to be with ther anti thiyroid...I had no problems with sickness/ vomiting until I was put on them...so two and two in my mind mean anti thiyroid no good for me..theirs something in the ingredients dont agree
OK, that seems reasonable. I think the lack of good care early on has rendered you hyperthyroid which can cause many symptoms including anxiety. Thus, the intolerance you have to carbimazole and polythiouracil (which DOES happen) gets amplified by the hyperthyroidism. A nasty Catch 22 situation. It does seem that a thyroidectomy would be the best (only?) option. I would avoid radio iodine treatment. Your endocrinologist should have tested you for various antibodies, make sure you request details of the results.
I'm not sure what you mean by not being able to keep an intravenous antibiotic down, did it make you sick?
Looking at some of your other posts you mentioned parathyroid disease. Was this a typo or do you have parathyroid problems also? If so do you know what your calcium levels are?
If you don't have them by now I would ask for a full copy of all your medical records, you need to know what is going on. I would also try and get a relative or friend to help you, to advocate for you. It would be better if they were an authorative male, sorry for the sexism but it's reality, or a strong assertive woman would do the trick. I think your dreadful condition is causing stress and anxiety and the doctors are blaming this and not what is actually causing the problem.
yesI vomited severely on antibiotics intro/orall...I was also diagnosis with overactive parathyroid glands in 2004..but my docs/ endo just checked my bloods until they said they return to normal levels.tbh..I have never felt well since that year 2004..then was sent to Newcastle hospital for tests..came bk as ME..fibromialgia..but I always felt I was a bit overactive but my GP always told me my bloods were in range...
Easy for me to say but you need your results and a good endocrinologist who will check you our properly and measure your calcium, TSH, fT3, fT4 and antibodies TPO and TRAb in particular. You might find magnesium supplements help in the meantime, particularly with fibromyalgia. I would work out a plan of acton and try and get someone to support you. A copy of your medical records is essential. Sorry, if this is a bit prescriptive and 'remote', I'm not very good at being sensitive!
The replys are much apriciated I'm waiting on bloods anti bodies ect..iv to go to my gps surgery to go over the results from the hospital,,I'm also to have bowl / stomach investigations...strange because my stomach and bowle were fine before the anti thiyroid drugs...so I defo think theirs a link...
Kind regards
Karen
Can't be sure whether gut problems are due to hyperthyroidism and maybe the onset corresponded with the anti-thyroid medication, or it's the anti-thyroid medication causing the problem. In either case sorting the hyperthyroidism (thyroidectomy?) might solve the gut problem. It might be better to prioritise your thyroid problem and then see how your gut is. Given diarrhoea is a consequence of hyperthyroidism which leads to loss of electrolytes (including magnesium) having invasive gut examinations seems premature, assuming they don't suspect anything sinister.
Been off the anti thyroid meds now for over 3 wks no gut problems now eating and drinking without vomting feel great apart from my normal hyper symptoms, tremor, shaking, fast heartbeat fast bowls, weakness in arms and legs intolerance to heat sweating..this is way better than when I was on the anti thiyroid meds I honestly thought I was dying I couldn't keep liquids down...I must be an enigma...😢😢
Does seem that any gut investigations can be postponed until your hyperthyroidism is sorted.
Hi Birkie. You have been on a real rollercoaster ride and my heart goes out to you - I wish you could be referred to an endo who makes a real effort to help and care for you. You seem to have met with such intransigence and poor care too many times when you have had severe hyperthyroidism.
I hope someone will discuss your options with you in a balanced and helpful way so you can make a decision that is the best for you and your future. Take care. x🤸🏿♀️
Thank you for your lovely reply..I do intend to ask why it has taken so long me to get to this horrid stage before anyone will listen. .eventho I was struggling with the Meds my endo refused to meet with me..she put all trust in my GP...who to be honest has no idear about my condition..I'm arranging for me to view my medical records both hospital and gps..as I saw some very strange things in my records whilst in hospital..because I read them on my way to see an endo in another hospital...I have the right but staff were angry...do I care..NO...
That is a great idea about the records and a good suggestion from jimh111. You can see what they were thinking.
Don’t be surprised if they show the medics think some of your issues are ‘psychological’ or down to ‘anxiety and depression’ - it’s a good get out clause for them when they don’t really know what to do. It seems to me that they have certainly avoided treating your illness with the seriousness it deserves.
I don’t care they were angry either - maybe they are worried what you will find...
When I went to my doctor because my heart kept racing following over-medication on Levo he told me twice there was nothing wrong and looked at me like I was some kind of hysterical lunatic. I later found out that he twice recorded ‘tachycardia’ on my notes. What a tw*t! 🤸🏿♀️🥛
That's discussing. I have had that sevral times in my 5/6 months it's no joke..you should be informed..I was so sick of my trips to hospital that when I was eventually taken in I asked every question I cud I also asked what my stats were when they were coming in ever hour to do them..they were not keen to do so but I was keeping records myself which they found weird...you really don't get much info from them I wouldn't mind but it's my body my health.....
My friend had similar problems to anti thyroid meds. Consultant wouldnt believe for ages . She had to stop in the end. Just to let u know , cant help anymore but maybe it might be the operation the only route .
Thank you for the reply..I know how you're friend feels..my endo told me I was a liar he had never heard of anyone not being able to take anti thiyroid meds..well I said I was OK before going on them just had the hyper symptoms no sickness or stomach/ bowl pain then I take them anti thiyroid and I thort I was dying..couldn't keep them down so they wouldn't work on brining the bloods down if I'm vomiting them bk and that's what's happend...consultants..think their gods.....their not.....
My friend’s consultant said the same thing! However we know of two !!
How awful for you that he said that. Don’t let it disempower you to seek the help you need . Good luck x
