Feeling ill my whole life, constantly tested and un diagnosed for thyroid disease since my father has it and grandmother has graves disease now..but i had all symptoms since a little girl but recieved no answers and all negative blood tests until 24 years old and finally a test came back positve for Hypo thyroidism (doctor would only tell me it was a little sluggish) and now i am almost bald..hair started falling before levothryoxine, now its worse. Been on levo for only 3 weeks so far. Hair is falling out with the follicle attached. Past blood tests have always shown low iron/sometimes anemic/sometimes normal iron levels!! Doctors do not take anything i say seriously..i am losing so much weight without trying (60 lbs-3 months) no appetite, feel sick after eating) so my doctors answer is that he thinks i have an inversion to food/eating disorder and thats B.S!! They just do not want to look in to it! anyone have any advice?? Please! Im scared i have something seriously wrong with me and i am dying and no one will look into it.

Please ask your doctor to do an early morning blood cortisol test, with your symptoms I'm wondering if you may have Addison's disease. Have a look on the Addisons website or the Pituitary Foundation for more information.

Go back to your doctor or another one in the practice and tell them something is seriously wrong. Be persistent and if you do not have an eating disorder then insist that you do not and make sure they record that you've refuted an eating disorder in your notes. Tell them you have lost a lot of weight and that is not normal for someone who is well and eating normally. Ask them to do all the relevant blood tests including cortisol as suggested already. Ask reception for a copy of your historical blood tests and then post them here for advice. Don't give up as clearly something is wrong.

If the GP is not cooperative then ask for a referral to an endocrinologist and make sure you get a copy of all blood test results. Ask the doctor if they have ruled out addisons disease, coeliac disease and vitamin B12 deficiency. As you have autoimmune disease in your family then these these things need ruling out. Don't leave the surgery until all avenues have been explored and make another appointment for 2 weeks time to discuss blood test results. Evven if they come back normal do not accept that everything is alright. If they come back normal then ask for a referral where more complex tests can be done to get to the bottom of your problems.

Make sure you have your blood drawn as early in the day as possible, 8/8.30am and also don’t take your thyroxine for 24hrs before test.

Have you had your B12 tested?

Low B12 is common in people with thyroid issues and very serious.

Do you have numbness or tingling, dizziness or vertigo, any loss of balance?

Not what you're looking for?
