You should be off iron supplement for a week before testing, and did you fast? Iron tests (but not ferritin in particular) need a fasting test.

Yes I fasted... Would the supplement make any difference to my % or os that just how my body works? I have the Hemocromotosis gene but always have ferritin under 40 so it's complicated I know doctors dont believe in ferritin levels being optimal , but even with gene ive never had ferritin higher than 50.

Sorry, I can't answer your question, I just know that you should be off iron supplements for a week when having any iron tests.

Ferritin levels can be affected by non-iron related things and it is an indirect marker of iron storage in the blood.

As a haemodyalysis patient, my Nephrologist uses Transferrin Saturation (often referred to as TSat) is the primary iron indicator to decide on my regular iron infusions.

Some other Nephrologists use Hypochromic as an alternate indicator.

Help with what?

They all look very good to me (have my iron levels tested every month and i'm jealous of your numbers).

What does the Saturation level mean?

Think of adding water to a sponge. You can only add so much before the sponge can't soak up any more water and it becomes completely saturated.

Blood is the same with iron and other iron-related compounds - there is only so much iron that blood can soak up. For good health the saturation has to be at the right level - blood which is too heavily saturated with iron could start depositing that iron in places where you don't want it, such as in your heart, your liver, your brain... The body doesn't have a mechanism for getting rid of excess iron, so people with haemochromatosis have to have blood removed

The fact that your saturation is above the range makes me think that you should stop supplementing iron. Do you know your haemoglobin level?

Thanks for the reply , makes sense. I had iron day before test so might effect results, so im going to stop supplements and retest again after xmas sometime. Im not sure about my haemoglobin but i think its in range.

Not what you're looking for?
