What do you think is going on here?

June 2017

TSH was 1.83 within the range (0.27 - 4.2)

T4 15.4 within the range (10.0 - 21.0)

T3 5.1 within the range (3.5 - 6.5)

Today November 2018 following increase of Levothryoxine from 50 mg - 75 mg on alternate days it is:

TSH 5.85

T4 14.6 with the range ( 10.0 - 21.0)

T3 4.5 within the range (3.5 - 6.5)

My TSH significantly up even thought T4 and T3 are within range.

What might be causing this? Pituitary under stress trying to produce TSH clearly. Managing to do it but at what cost to pituitary??

What do I need to ask Doctor?

I presume you have loads of symptoms. How is your pulse? You are on a very low dose of thyroid hormones still and I imagine will need a much higher dose as things progress. You need to have you TSh below 1 to feel well. I wouldn't say your pituaritary is stressed it is just producing some more TSh to respond to you needs.I think that when you start thyroid meds you thyroid can reduce its out put so the TSH responding to this. Is the increase by 25mcg every other day or have you just been taking all your thyroid meds every other day.Either way, why every other day? It can be useful to take a higher dose every other day when you meds are very difficult to titrate and it is found that every day is a bit too much but looks like you are nowhere near on too much.

Let me know your pulse and symps.

This happened to me. I was started on too low a dose and kept there too long. TSH kept rising, T4 and T3 fell. I felt terrible.

You are hopelessly undermedicated. You need to go up to 75 Levo a day immediately and because you have been made worse by the GP, push to retest in 4 weeks. Then you can move up to 100 Levo and retest in 6 weeks and so on until your levels are much better and you feel well.

I don’t know the technical reasons for this happening, but it feels as if the thyroid has struggled a long time and when it gets some hormone fed in, it stops trying and slacks off.

I think your pituitary is doing it’s job, by detecting that you have insufficient thyroid hormone and trying to stimulate more. You need a dose increase, assuming the last test was taken six weeks after your last increase in dose.

We're both tests done early in the morning as that can give different readings if not done at the same time and as early as possibly. I'm bresuming you were fasted and hadn't taken medication for 24 hours.
