VITIMIN D3

I have an underactive thyroid and have been experiencing tired sore muscles along with numbness/tingling in my feet. I've heard from various people with thyroid issues this can be due to deficiency in vitamin d.

I currently have a reading of 46. I took 1000 of vitamin d3 for a while but this did nothing to elevate my symptoms.

Would it be ok if I tied 2000 for a while?

Apologies before hand for any mistakes

I assume that your Vit D result is 46 nmol/L? If so then The Vit D Council, the Vit D Society and Grassroots Health all recommend a level of 100-150nmol/L. 1000iu D3 is merely a maintenance dose for someone with a decent level already. To raise your level to that recommended then the Vit D Council recommends:

To achieve 100nmol/L then take 3200 IU D3 daily

To achieve 125nmol/L then take 4900 IU D3 daily

To achieve 150nmol/L then take 7000 IU D3 daily

along with D3's important cofactors Vit K2-MK7 and magnesium.

Retest after 3 months and adjust dose if necessary.

My level is 150nmol/L and I need 5000iu daily as a maintenance dose.

Do you have Hashimoto's? If so then you will be best with BetterYou oral spray for better absorption. If not then a good quality D3 softgel such as Doctor's Best will be fine.

Hi SeasideSusie

Yes sorry it is 46 nmol/L that I meant sorry I'm a bit rubbish with this. With that level what does would you suggest I use?

I'm not aware I have Hashimoto's

It's up to you. I've given the Vit D Council's recommended doses in my previous reply. Personally, as we can't make Vit D naturally at this time of year and draw on our store, I would aim for the upper part of the recommended range and use close to the dose recommended for that.

Remember to retest to check your level after 3 months and make any adjustment that may be necessary.

Tingling and numbness is more likely to be due to low vit B12. Have you had that tested?

Hi greygoose

Yes I've been tested for B12 and it was 509ng/L

Could be higher. Do you have any other B12 deficiency symptoms? Apparently, B12 deficiency is more about symptoms than numbers. So, it wouldn't hurt to try taking say 1000 mcg sublingual methylcobalamin and a B complex. :)

Well I have stiffness in my hands numbness and a bit of discomfort mainly underneath my feet.

Do you think its more likely to be B12 rather then vitamin D?

Now I'm confused as to whether these symptoms are likely to be due to vitamin d deficiency or B12?

Well, you said that supplementing with vit D hadn't helped. So, try B12, see if that helps. It's not something to get into a stew about. If one thing doesn't work, we try another. :)

But, to be honest, I've never heard of low vit d causing pins and needles, that is normally associated with B12.

Hi greygoose

Yea the vit D dose of 1000iu didn't work but I wondered if that was because I needed to take more. Or do you think that dose should have alleviated my issues?

Yes its manly Numbing feeling underneath my feet sore joints and stiff feeling in hands.

So it seems your saying these symptoms are not due to not enough Vit D but in fact due to lack of b12 B12. My B12 was at 599 which I thought was very high anyway?

Pardon my repetitive posts I just get very confused about it all.

No. I said pins and needles are normally associated with low B12. And numbing can also be, but could be due to low thyroid. Sore joints could be the vit D. And, as SeasideSusie says, 1000 iu is probably not enough to raise your level. So, try taking vit B12 and more vit D. :)

You're welcome. :)

When I had my Vitamin D tested it was below 20. Since then I have been taking 2000iu per day for two years and it's now over 100. I take it with the fattest meal of the day with K2 which works together with the Vitamin D. I have never experienced pins and needle though.

Do they do 1000 mcg sublingual methylcobalamin and a B complex combination together in a brand?

greygoose in reply to Wayne39

No. They're two different tablets. The B complex is not sublingual, so that means it has to go into the stomach, and the B12 risks destruction by the stomach acid, so you do need that sublingual.

Numbness and tingling in feet sounds more like a B12 deficiency. Don't supplement until you have been tested for pernicious anaemia
