I take 175mcg of Levothyroxine a day.

How do I work out the dosages for Thyroid S and Thyrovanz ??

Firstly, you do need to get the units sorted out. Levothyroxine doses are usually in micrograms (mcg) - not milligrams (mg).

Secondly, you need to realise that there is no exact conversion. The manufacturers of most of the major desiccated thyroid product suggest that one grain (60 to 65 milligrams) of desiccated thyroid is about equivalent to 100 micrograms of levothyroxine. However most posters here suggest that it is closer to 75 micrograms of levothyroxine. So somewhere around two grains of Thyroid S.

I do not know the thyroid hormone content of Thyrovanz.

I hope others who have actually made the changeover will also respond.

175mcg daily I take.

I’m just trying to decide between the 2 brands and decide which to order.

Good reviews about both.

The NDT conversion I was given is that you need to multiply the T3 content by 3 and add the T4 to get a rough equivalent to levo. Thyroid S is 38mcg T4 and 9mcg T3, so I grain = 38+(9x3)=65.

The nearest to 175 levo is 2.75 grains so you would need a pill cutter. Do not do a straight swap as your body is likely to react strongly to the sudden influx of T3. It takes time for your existing levo intake to get used up so there is no need to rush. I swapped a grain in and 50 levo out, then half a grain and 25 levo 2 weeks later, i then swapped to quarter raises reducing the remaining levo, taking stock of how I felt and eventually settled on 2.5 which was very slightly over the 150 levo I had been on (162).

I definately felt a bit ‘buzzy’ during titration and had hot flushes but no palps and the buzz etc settled down nicely before the next increase. If it is not settling down you may need smaller increases or longer times between increases to adjust. You may also find that your eventual NDT dose does not correlate to your levo dose which is why small increases are essential to avoid over shooting. Unlike many I had very good conversion and had been able to tweak my levo and nutrients to as close to perfect as possible with my GP prior to changing, I just couldnt get rid of the fatigue on levo yet my FT3 is almost exactly the same on NDT and fatigue has gone - this may help explain titration differences people have

Be careful not to miss your sweet spot by going too high too quickly. My over medicated symptoms are almost identical to under, and there is only a very narrow dosage window for me. I was convinced I needed more due to symptoms but FT3 testing showed i was overmedicated and a quarter drop put things right.

You will probably find that your FT4 will be near the bottom of the range and your TSH suppressed on the correct dose of NDT so in my opinion FT3 test is essential to get titration right (and to argue against overmedication with your GP)

Hope my experience with Thyroid S helps, Good luck

Where’s recommended for me to order Thyroid S ?

Someone’s given me <a Canadian> link but I don’t just want to order from anywhere plus there’s no strength listed on that link 🤔

Phoenix605 profile image

Thyroid S only comes in one strength, Unfortunately, my last supplier involved ordering a ‘spoof’ product and they sent Thyroid -S in its place which worked ok but makes me a bit uneasy. I was down to less than a months supply after my previous supplier ceased trading so I was stuck. I intend to give < supplier details removed by Admin as it contravenes Forum Guideline #25 > a try as it is sold openly so you are covered by the guarantee, if you ask, I believe most sellers are happy to advise of the useby date on their current batch prior to purchase.

It all seems a bit random to me, just take tablets that have no strength in the description and hope for the best 🤔

No idea what strength Thyroid S is to start with so you just pick a number a take that amount of tablets by look of it ☹️

I gave you the strength in my first response, If you google STTM NDT they have a list of the most common products and their hormone content where available.

The info is not readily available from suppliers in their adverts as once they state the hormone content it cannot be sold freely as a ‘supplement’ but becomes regulated by big brother and their listings get pulled (hence the spoof listings and they get banned if caught at it).

PS we got edited, as yours hadnt been at the time I forgot and repeated it, i will be trying the same supplier you mentioned!

I’m not familiar with this calling things grains.

So 1 grain is 1 tablet I’m guessing ?

So 2 & 3/4 is need a day

There’s the <a Canadian source> & Thyrovanz I’ve been told about to order off.

You really need to become familiar with grains. Never guess. Read, research, ask.

A grain is exactly 64.79891 milligrams. In the real world, some companies chose to round up to 65 milligrams; some companies chose to round down to 60 milligrams.

Some companies emphasis the dosage in grains; some companies emphasise the dosage in milligrams.

In the case of Thyroid S, they only make one dosage - 60 milligrams/one grain.

In the case of Thyrovanz, they use a bizarre 50 milligram base dosage.

Phoenix ,what do you mean by "spoof",did you receive fake product?

Phoenix605 profile image
Phoenix605 in reply to Katilda3

No it was a spoof listing ie you ‘buy’ one product but are actually sent the genuine NDTproduct you want as the seller cannot list NDT openly (in the UK at least). The last time I did it I ‘bought’ a particular skin care supplement but received Thyroid -S.

The danger is obviously you could get ripped off if it is a dodgy supplier- if the supplier had sent the cheap skincare supplement I would have had no legal standing to complain and lost my cash. That is why I only did it as a last resort, and got away with it, and hopefully can use a less risky route next year.

I dont think the issue is being sent fake NDT it is the risk you are not sent the NDT at all. The canadian site should be relatively safe in that you are buying openly listed NDT so are covered by the guarantee, use of a credit card or paypal would also offer protection

Ok, thanks for explaining. I need a good seller of thyroid-S,I've tried pretty much everything else and it's the only thing that works for me.

in reply to Phoenix605

Well said! Many seem to worry about FT4 levels dropping when on NDT. I used to as well, before I realised FT3 levels are the most important one when on any medication containing T3. The TSH, as you say, will most likely be suppressed so basically useless when optimally dosed on NDT.

in reply to Phoenix605

Could I ask what you are currently taking? Interested as I've been trying to tweak my own dosage and realising overdosing on NDT/T3 is not the way to go...

I have 2.45 tablets of Thyroid S which equates to the 175mcg Levo I used to take.

Thankyou that’s a great help 😊

And how do you feel now on the Thyroid S ? Better than the synthetic ?

Phoenix605 profile image
Phoenix605 in reply to Wiccanwitch

I now feel ‘normal’ and the neck / back issues I developed after diagnosis are much improved but will probably always be a weakness. Im not sure if it was the levo causing or a hypo symptom to be honest. There is anecdotal evidence both ways but I certainly don't appear to have developed any new issues.

The fatigue going was the most noticeable, but I firmly believe you do need to get all your nutrients and levo optimal like I did first. I always knew we needed good nutrient levels but was surprised to realise i could feel a noticeable physical and mental difference, it also meant that the remaining fatigue had to be thyoid related as my levo was also optimal. No point going through the hassle and expense of self medication if some tweaks to nutrients and levo will do the same job.
