Thank you so much but, like much else, who to rely on?

I'll now check it out; as stated the company I used to use seems to put citrate in everything. I rely on here for supplement info - so much else to check out!

BUT big clue to my very recent constipation - something I never suffer from!

Well, you don't really, you just do lots of research of your own. But with the list in your picture - Magnesium Oxide - that's the one that I have repeatedly seen to avoid due to it being poorly absorbed and ineffective for correcting magnesium deficiency . But if you want it as a short term laxative or to ease digestive discomfort it might be fine.

Thank you SeasideSusie: oh I don't rely on... I can/do research [have been one!] but sooo much else to look out for health wise, no time for everything or I'd meet myself going back to bed. :-( The list was from a link originally, I believe, posted on here: I took it at face value for the reasons above!

Oh, just found this: but really no time to check it all :-( which is really sad!

"There is no credible scientific evidence that taking magnesium citrate at levels recommended on supplement labels has any effect on ceruloplasmin."

I've avoided Oxide and Sulfate in any event due to the small doses aspect - I've enough to take over the day without adding those to it.

Never had an issue with magnesium BUT now I see it may have been recently changing to other forms which may equally not be so good: I'm now taking Magnesium Taurate [long standing heart issue] + Magnesium Glycinate with... etc.

Hmm thanks, time to re-check - husband keeps saying to give him a list of and he'll check it all out... that time has arrived. Maybe I'll go back to x1 Citrate every other day in the morning. Wahhh - where did life itself go?

I take mag taurate for heart issues and magnesium citrate as I need the laxative effect, it's the only thing that has gently normalised my lifelong constipation.

Interesting - thank you - never much had constipation issues but recently - WOW [clearly due to taking out mag citrate!!] - so I've compensated with other things BUT it's back to x1 Citrate... each morning!

I take Co-Q10, Acetyl L-Carnitine, B1 + B3, etc and D-ribose for heart/energy ++

So, thanks so much Polly91 for asking that Q and SeasideSusie for your info :-)

Well..I've been taking magnesium oxide for months, because it was on a list of free drugs I could get from my insurance company. Now I know why! I'll stop it immediately and go get one of the best ones. Thanks SeasideSusie!!!

Oh please don't stop on the basis of that - others have said that it's absolutely fine - I stopped mag citrate due to that info. and I'm now unsure that the above info is correct. PLEASE read what others have said and check it out for yourself.

If anything, this only serves to remind us all that we've got to keep on top of every single thing!! As if there's not enough to deal with by ourselves :-(

I switched over to bisglycinate because I saw it on offer and coincidence or not suffered from constipation which is very unlike me, I'm usually pretty regular as clockwork!

Went back to citrate and normal service was resumed.

Nowadays I do the skin magnesium oil when I go to the sauna and let it soak in for 15 minutes. On non-sauna days I take the citrate version. Seems to work for me.

Thank you spongecat - how interesting. I've been meaning to try the mag oil - good recommendation - happy it works for you.

Hi Linda, The chart posted by LindaC looks very thorough and accurate to me. I've taken magnesium for several years after an atrial fibrillation diagnosis and her information is similar to mine. I alternate between buying glycinate and taurate depending on prices when I refill my supply. There are also charts which list the amount of elemental magnesium in the various types listed. I mention this because the only form I would suggest avoiding is magnesium oxide and here's why. You are not getting what you need. Sometimes magnesium oxide is advertised as having one of the highest amounts of elemental magnesium. That is true but what is not said is the oxide form has a very low rate of magnesium absorption so no matter how much mag is there you won't absorb it. Magnesium oxide is very cheap and if a product (often found on grocery shelves) is labelled just magnesium-not specifying the type it is almost always the oxide form. Avoid this-you're wasting your money and not getting absorbable mag. The other forms including the ones I use usually cost me 20-30 USDollars monthly. I would rather cut corners elsewhere than not get the magnesium I need. I feel it really makes me feel better and I believe contributes to my cardiac stability. I also use magnesium oil ( a spray) after showers for a little extra boost. The spray is for sale but I make my own-very easy and MUCH cheaper. There are a number of recipes online for homemade magnesium oil. I got mine from a website <wellnessmama.com> (I have nothing to do with it). Hope this helps. Magnesium is one of the most important minerals and deficiencies are common worldwide. Soils are so depleted worldwide and, IMO, even foods listed as high in magnesium are only as good as the soil they are grown in. Also, when we have labwork and a magnesium level is drawn it often comes back 'within normal limits'. This is very misleading because magnesium is stored in every cell and our blood number only measures about 1 % of what we have available. That's the amount in the blood. The other 99% can't be measured by a blood test. I wasn't aware of all this until an Electrophysiologist explained it. Hope this helps. Take care. irina

Wow - thank you so much for that great info. irina1975: much appreciated on behalf of all of us magnesium peeps. Take care and be well :-) x

in reply to LindaC

Thank you. Sorry it was so long-one of my soapboxes I guess. Especialy when often doctors say we can get what we need from food; our blood level is fine so don't worry, have no clue to give us about which forms to buy or avoid and other such drivel. Take care. irina

No, not at all irina - great info - I can't precis any longer [long term undiagnosed left its mark] - I have to spend a good while tearing their [consultants] crappy letters to GP apart, line by line. I've watched the most appalling things [neglectful] happen to my parents, grandparents + some family members; now it's my turn in this 21st C. How rubbish is that!? Best to you xox

You too.😊

Thanks AnnaSo - I'm not so sure now but it's sooo good to question and check out anything and everything.

Because I was buying from a v. very good UK company, I thought it was fine... then something came my way that said, "Not so"... like everything in these times, check, double check further... ;-) Sadly, many of us just don't have time to go through every single aspect because we're still trying to 'fix ourselves'. xox

Magnesium citrate works for me. I use Calm vitality Magnesium powder.

Good to hear it! Whatever works for us, it's great to keep with it.

The first I heard of M Citrate not being so good was the link that I posted above, which I think I got from here way back, and which set me off to find alternatives when my large supply was finished... everyone must check out but not everyone has that time available.

I'm afraid I wouldn't know now what's working and what's not... so precarious has my health [further] become. 2010 - 2012 = great on Armour T; 2012 - 2015 = great on T3 alone. January 2015... down, down and... so I now have no clue of anything that's helping due to low body temps, rendering me 'punch-drunk' - even in this hot summer - oh, two weeks I was fine. :-)
