Hi,

Recently started taking magnesium and I cannot function with it. Sleep day and night and feel depressed. Probably from the fatigue.

Are you diagnosed hypothyroid?

Taking Levo?

What dose of Levo are you on?

Are you optimally medicated?

What are you latest test results (please post reference ranges also)?

Magnesium can be calming and relaxing, which is why it's recommended to take it during the evening.

What form are you taking? Maybe a different form would suit better

Yes, taking Levo, 25, taking the citrate form of magnesium. Have stopped taking it and feel 100% better. I'm older 66 and have also had a colitis issue in March. Energy levels were so bad all summer I thought I would try the magnesium. Thanks

Magnesium citrate might not be the best form for you. It can have laxative properties, and my late husband had ulcerative colitis and he certainly wouldn't have been able to tolerate mag citrate!

How long have you been diagnosed and taking 25mcg Levo? It is a starter dose only.

What are your latest thyroid test results? If you don't have them, ask at your surgery's reception desk for a print out and post them here on the forum. It's very likely that you are undermedicated and why you are so tired and depressed - both symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Worth getting vitamin and mineral levels tested too, low iron causes fatigue, low B12 and Vit D all have awful symptoms.

Ask GP, or do privately:

Vit D

B12

Folate

Ferritin

I find Magnesium to be calming. Also, having increased my intake I have more not less stamina...however, my other nutrient levels are very good. I recently noticed getting slightly Mag deficient (mild back ache ) again when my B Vits, Iron and Vit D were very good and it was very warm weather and doing diy. I took Epsom salt baths and used some Mag spray and it worked better than painkillers.

The most obvious side effect of too much Mag is loose poo. Carolyn Dean's book on Magnesium says to increase the dose gradually as some people can get quite a strong detox reaction as the cells 'wake up' and release toxins that will make them very tired.

It may also be that you're still low in B Vitamins and Iron and Vitamin D and these too need to be addressed?

magnesium is also a muscle relaxer. that's why the diarrhea. I relaxes everything. You might try taking Malic Acid with your magnesium and calcium ( can be taken together) Also K2 will take the calcium from your blood and deposit it into your bones. take before bed time. If you cant function with it stop. take just the malic acid.Hope this helps.

Hi there - as someone who suffered with Hughes Syndrome sticky blood due to Lupus - you have to be careful with K2 as it is a blood clotter. Whilst it has enormous benefits we do need to be aware of this issue too.

Quote Vitamin K1 is primarily found in leafy green vegetables, while K2 is most abundant in fermented foods and some animal products. ... Vitamin K likely plays an important role in blood clotting and promoting good heart and bone health. Vitamin K is used by the body to help blood clot. Warfarin (Coumadin) is used to slow blood clotting. By helping the blood clot, vitamin K might decrease the effectiveness of warfarin Unquote

Mg is a very important mineral with 300 identified metabolic pathways in the human body. Take Mg which is chelated to an amino acid such as Mg Glycinate or Mg Taurate; less laxative effect. Your fatigue might be caused by other vitamin deficiencies as mentioned in other posts. Good luck!

Thanks, all the information helps. I had tried to add it several years ago with the same symptoms.

Hi there Magnesium can affect the kidneys/adrenal gland as well as relaxing the muscles etc. - see link adrenaladvice.com/magnesium... - perhaps your sodium levels went too low - salty Ritz crackers do it for me.

I realize this is an old thread, but I took a magnesium and within the hour I felt as if I had been drugged...I fell right asleep on the couch and literally couldn't get up. I'm afroad to try it again with such an extreme reaction. Perhaps it was took large of a dose at 120 mg?
