Hi there,

I’ve got my blood results and wondered if you could help me decipher them?

Thyroid Function Test - (SPS) - Normal

Serum TSH Level 2.96 mu/L

0.35 - 5.00 mu/l

Serum free T4 level 11.5 pmol/L

7.00 - 20.00 pmol/L

Serum free T3 level 5.5 pmol/L

3.8 - 6.70pmol/L

Any help would be gratefully received :)

As you had Graves disease and RAI, these results are probably alright as your FT3 is highish in range. If you are feeling unwell, have you had all your vitamin levels tested? Low vitamin levels are very likely in people with thyroid disease. I presume you had antibodies results for Graves disease? Were any other antibodies tested at the time or since?

Hi, thanks for your response. I haven’t ever had Graves’ disease.

I had my B12 checked some time ago but I don’t think they tested others. I seem to be going round in circles with it all 😢

If you didn't have Graves disease why did you have RAI? What antibodies did the doctor test to diagnose an overactive thyroid?

I was diagnosed overactive in June 2016 and went into Carbimazole, that didn’t work so had RAI in December 2016. I had a nodule on my thyroid but not Graves.

Perhaps you need to find out what antibodies you had at the time of diagnosis and what antibodies you now have? Can you get copies of results of blood tests at the time of diagnosis? You will clarify your situation when you have the results of antibodies.

Ok, so, I think I understand that you had a toxic nodule which would be antibody negative. Could still be worth double checking previous results.

You must have vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested.

If your GP refuses then private testing is available

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4, TT4, FT3 plus TPO and TG thyroid antibodies. Plus very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting.

If on Levothyroxine, don't take in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take straight after

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, GP will be unaware)

As you have had RAI you may find strictly gluten free diet helps, perhaps worth trying
