Advice on magnesium and b complex supplements

Hi All,

I'm looking for some advice on purchasing magnesium and b complex as I have Hashi's so believe from what I've read it is important to supplement both of these. I have bought Igennus b complex before but these are going to run out now. I do find them a bit pricey would anyone be able to recommend a cheaper alternative please. I have seen Biocare Magnesium Malate which seem a reasonable price. Is this a good supplement? Or is there any other one that is good value anyone could recommend please?

Thanks so much for any replies.

Personally I think Igennus are one of the best, with good quality ingredients. I only take one per day, not the recommended two tablets, so lasts longer and cheaper.

Calm vitality magnesium powder is cheap and easy to use. Can improve constipation too, if that's an issue. May not be as absorbable as malate.

Thanks SlowDragon I think I will stick to this brand then as I do want something with good quality ingredients. I have also been just taking one so that's good.

I'll have a look at the powder. I rarely get constipation now I think because I take Vitamin c too. Maybe the malate would be better then.

Beware cheap supplements, you really do get what you pay for.

Igennus is cheaper than Thorne Basic B. My friend uses Doctors Best Fully Active B Complex which is a bit cheaper than Igennus if you were to take 2 x Igennus

Whichever one you choose, look at the ingredients - look for bioavailable, fully active, active form, etc. Look for methylcobalamin for the B12 content and methylfolate rather than folic acid. Also look at the doses of the individual ingredients.

For magnesium, check which form would suit you best

Biocare is a decent make. I use Natural Calm Original powder magnesium citrate as I need the laxative properties.

Thank you Seasidesusie,

Thanks for the recommendation of the doctor's best I'll have a look at the link.

That's great to know what to look out for I usually get confused when looking at all the different supplements. I'll have a read of the link and try to pick the one that will best suit me that's great info.

I might end up going for the Biocare good to know it's a good make. I'm not sure I do need the laxative properties I sometimes have the opposite problem so maybe I shouldn't go for the powder. Thanks so much.

I have been using Thorne basic b for quite some time, one of few supplements I am able to attribute noticeable improvements to. I tried igennus one, for a change but did not feel they were as good as Thorne so I am not experimenting any more...

Hi Sybilla,

I will have a look at the Thorne one maybe for next time now as I decided to go with the Igennus one in the end. It's good you've found one that suit you. I never seem to know what is helping. Thank you.

Thanks RFU. I'll have a look at that website too good to have cheaper options. Thanks for recommending some b complex too I'll have a look on amazon.

Just caught up with this post so you may already have all the information you need. But just thought I'd give my view.

I learned some time ago (probably a couple of years actually) that it's best to buy good quality supplements with as few fillers as possible. Otherwise if you end up taking quite a few supplements, you're ingesting quite a lot of (usually )magnesium stearate and other similar fillers and additives.

So I looked around for supplements with no fillers. I use some fillers made by 'Pure Encapsulations' a good brand but they are expensive, but you get what you pay for. I got those from a site called Pure Bio. But later I found G & G Vitamins, a great brand made in the UK with no fillers at all. So your supplement will be a vegetable capsule shell filled with the actual supplement you want to take. They're still expanding their range so for example they only currently have one type of Magnesium but may have others in the future. But a very good company, good service.

Also I would avoid multi vitamins and minerals as you could be taking a lot of vitains and minerals you really don't need. Always target the supplement you need individually, then you can also control the dosages of each one.

Not what you're looking for?
