You could try Thorne Research Basic B, although it is expensive :

thorne.com/products/dp/basi...

Or there is Jarrow B-Right :

jarrow.com/product/57/B-Right

I don't think a good value and good quality B Complex exists any more. They are all expensive if they contain the best forms of B vitamins in sensible amounts.

Be careful to avoid vitamin B6 in high doses. It can build up and cause neuropathic damage.

And remember that any product containing biotin must be stopped for a week before doing any testing of any kind.

I have just changed from Thorne Basic B, which I have been taking for years and been very happy with, to Igennus Super B due to the rising cost of Thorne.

I don't need the higher amount of B12 in the Igennus suggested dose of 2 tablets so I'm only taking 1 tablet, but this is only giving 200mcg methylfolate which is only half of the amount I was getting in the Thorne. I have a feeling my folate level is going to drop, it was less than half way through range at last test in September so I may have to reconsider.

Is there a particular reason you want to change from the Igennus brand?

in reply to SeasideSusie

Hi There No reasons really it's just I thought maybe I dont need super b I've decided to stick to it tho the b12 wont matter if ive got PA but your right the folate might drop on one tablet its took me ages to build up my folate a bit more I got mine for £19 for 2 tubs of 60 so I'll stick to them now

SeasideSusie

Couldn't you buy a separate methylfolate product to go with the Igennus?

That's what I do.

I take 1 tablet of Igennus Super B, and then take a high dose methylfolate supplement four days a week, and also a high dose methylcobalamin supplement four days a week.

The Igennus product :

igennus.com/products/super-...

has the following instructions for taking it :

Adults should take 1 Super B-Complex tablet twice daily with food. Children aged 7-16 years should take 1 tablet daily. Split dosing of our vitamin B-complex tablets is advised for optimal uptake and consistent intake is recommended for optimal results.

A lot of people take 2 tablets a day for the first bottle and possibly the second too, then they reduce their dose to 1 a day to save money and because most B vitamins are excreted in urine if the body has too much. (It is possible to overdose on vitamin B6.)

The full dose of two tablets contains 400mcg folate which is considered to be 200% of the recommended daily intake.

The only reason I take extra folate is because I don't seem to absorb it very well and one tablet of the Igennus product keeps my level quite low. So I bought these to top me up :

amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07...

and take one tablet four days a week.

There is nothing "official" about my dose - it just happens to be what works for me.

in reply to humanbean

Thank you I'm not sure about my folate rising that good either taking 2 tablets for well over a year now I hope being on this long term with the b6 in it is not doing me any harm

What to expect from Vitamin B6 deficiency :

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitam...

and what to expect from B6 toxicity :

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitam...

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megav...

About a decade ago I took a high dose B Complex. At the time I had sore feet and peripheral neuropathy. The B Complex I took helped to get rid of the problem, so I'm assuming that I was suffering from B6 deficiency.

I continued to take the high dose B Complex and was fine for a few months. Then the foot problems I had earlier started to come back. I did some research and discovered that B6 toxicity was a problem. I stopped taking the B Complex and didn't take another B Complex for a few years. The neuropathy in my feet went away again.

Then I began learning about the thyroid and started to take a better quality B Complex. I always make sure to buy a B Complex with a fairly low dose of B6 in now. I don't want to end up in the same situation I was in all those years ago.

Thank you so much for all the info my problem still is the numb tingling feet still I upped my B12 injections as well as the 2 tablets a day b complex but still got the weird numb tingling sensations in my feet I shall read up on this info...

in reply to humanbean

Would you say the b6 dose in the Ingennes 2 tablets a day is too much? Been on these a long while now only stopping a week or do before blood tests my only probs I have atm is hair loss and numb tingling feet lower leg swelling a bit fatigued at times trying to figure it out what I might be lacking in the vitamins side of things

Sorry, but I really can't decide that for you.

I give myself a break from all my supplements for a week or two, sometimes longer, whenever I run out and have to order more. If coming off something makes me feel better then I'll stay off it for a while to decide whether I've done the right thing or not.

in reply to humanbean

That's ok you have been very helpful the only time I felt better was coming off Levo for few weeks but after 6 weeks all came back that was around 2017

HB - this is excellent advice and info - what brand of lower B6 do you use instead? I'd like to try reducing my igennus b complex dose from 2 tablets to a single tablet but wouldn't want to lose the methylfolate.

humanbean profile image
humanbean in reply to Redlester

I'm currently taking one pill per day of Igennus Super B. The full dose is 2 tablets per day. I did start with taking two per day for the first bottle.

Each pill of the Igennus Super B contains 10mg vitamin B6.

I also take methylfolate (1000mcg) and methylcobalamin (5000mcg) four days a week. I struggle to keep my levels of folate up, but I invariably have over-the-range serum vitamin B12 (which works for me but is probably not necessary for most people).

I recently added 100mg thiamine because I'd read it would increase my energy levels. I'm still waiting...

thanks for such a helpful reply humanbean - I had no idea about the B6 toxicity even at the low level which 2 Igennus capsules would provide which is why I want to drop down. Sorry for another question but what brand of methylcobalamin do you use? and do you notice anything different on the days when you don't do the methylB12/folate top ups? [I'm assuming you do methyl B12 one day and then the methylfolate on the alternate day] . I know what works for one doesn't work for all but it is always good to know what someone else finds helpful in order to tweak your own regimen.

I had to go off my Igennus 2 pd for a week before a blood test recently - I was almost non-functional during those 7 days although I would imagine it was the methylfolate and B12 I was missing [as oppposed to the biotin!]

B6 toxicity is unlikely to occur with 2 pills of Igennus Super B per day. With the links I've given on B6 toxicity above it suggests that the upper safe limit for vitamin B6 intake has been set at between 25mg - 100mg per day by different countries. With such a wide band of upper safe limit, and with a history of having overdosed on B6, I stick to something below 25mg per day. It works for me, but others may need more.

I don't have a favourite brand of methylcobalamin or methylfolate. Being a cheapskate wherever possible I go by price (within limits).

These are what I'm currently taking :

amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07...

amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07...

I actually take the methylfolate and the methylcobalamin on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, rather than having different days for each. There is no particular logic behind this. It just happens to be how I fill up my pill boxes.

If going off your B Complex had such an big effect on you when you missed it out then it would seem to suggest you are still deficient. The only one I notice the lack of in a big way these days is if I stop my methylcobalamin. I get spotty and my eczema returns.

Thank you for the wise advice humanbean. I did try dropping down to one Igennus tab per day [from 2] but have since gone back to 2 per day. Thank you too for the recommendations for B12 and folate - would be good to have a folate "back-up" to take in times when I have to go off the B complex for blood testing.

in reply to humanbean

Sorry to ask so can I take a folate supplement as well as 2 ingennes b complex or would it be too much folate sorry if I'm not understanding it

humanbean profile image
humanbean in reply to

Yes you could do that, but I wouldn't suggest doing that for a very long time. Try it for a couple of months then retest. If your level is okay and you want to reduce to a maintenance dose then either

1) Stop taking the separate folate supplements and carry on with the B Complex alone

or

2) Reduce the dose of the B Complex to one a day and carry on with the folate supplement

or

3) Carry on with the B Complex as before but reduce the number of days you take the folate supplement to, say, 2 or 3 or 4 days a week.

in reply to humanbean

Thank you so much !

could you not just up the folate level by taking a single methylfolate supp [if one exists] in addition to the Igennus B complex ?
