Are my tests normal?

rustydog profile image

A while ago I asked for my thyroid levels to be checked. When I rang the surgery I was told all ok. However, I’ve just been looking at my various blood test results online and wonder if the levels are normal. I’m not sure what they should be so thought I’d ask you guys. These are the results:-

Serum TSH level 2.11

Serum free T4 level 13.8

Thanks

Hi rustydog

You need to include the lab ranges, I also see they haven't tested for T3 either.

You need T3 testing as well to look at the whole thyroid picture.

Don't be fobbed off by the receptionist/GP they are normal. You are entitled to a copy of your results free of charge.

However, as said above you need T3 testing, not many GP's will test this.

Perhaps if they will not test this, pay for private bloods to be taken medi checks or blue horizon do a full thyroid and also vitamins, which I would suggest you check as well.

Best Wishes

Hi members will also need the ranges of them bloods as these differ in different regions-i ecpect they did not do ft3 as maybe your tsh is in range-more experienced members will guide you through.

Thanks, I’ve got the lab ranges online, I’ll take a look and post in a min. I wasn’t aware of the T3! Typical blooming surgery!!

Are you able to have Private Testing through Thyroid UK - go to - About Testing - on the Menu in the link below ....

thyroiduk.org

You do have to ask yourself - as we all do - why do the NHS not do the most important tests - FT3 and Thyroid Anti-bodies - TPO & Tg - to rule out hashimotos - the most common thyroid issue globally.

Your FT4 looks a little low to me which could also cause the FT3 to be low too.

Having vitamins and minerals tested is helpful too - if low they can make you feel rotten. B12 - Folate - Ferritin - VitD need testing and good in their ranges ....

As much as I’d love to have the test privately, I just can not afford it atm, unfortunately 😔

I’ve just looked at my various tests again these are the ones I can see that I have had done recently:-

Dec 2017

Iron - 10.1 (up from 9, I’ve had anaemia for a while)

Ferritin - 6ng

My TSH level range says 0.27-4.2

Serum T4 range says 12-22 ( it was 14.5 in 2004)

I’ve had other tests such as serum creatinine and correct serum calcium levels (not quite sure what they are) and I asked to be tested for coeliac disease, these came back as 0.1 ( level range is 0-7).

It’s all a bit confusing and I don’t feel I get very far with my gp tbh. All he has said is that I’m anaemic and I’m back and forth trying various supplements as they all upset my IBS, the only thing that helps is Spatone but that is raising my levels extremely slowly!

Oh and in Dec my vitamin D levels were 46 but gp said this is normal for the winter time.

Just because most people are vit D deficient in winter, does not make it normal to be vit d deficient! Especially when you're hypo. I would supplement that a bit, if I were you.

Your VitD would be better around 100. I posted the main website of this forum abve - I would read and read to learn more about the thyroid.
