Will adding T3 help?

Hey everyone.

For the past 10 years I have felt very unwell, just feeling under the weather all the time, not knowing I had thyroid issues. So I was diagnosed 7 years ago, doc said boardeline hypothyroidism, started with 25mcg of Levo then upped to 50mcg 5 years ago (upped myself) now currently on 75mcg but still feel terrible. Low mood(yelling and shouting) don't feel alert and like am hangover all the time , but the worst one is the constant headache all day everyday (head feels like it's being squeezed) . All this for 1 and half years now.

Now I have bought my own T3 which I want to try( can't be as bad as I'm feeling right now)

Can I get some suggestions/advice on how/when and how much I should take with or without levo?

I'm on top of all my vitamins.

Vit D 182

Folate 19.4 (3.8-9999)

Ferritin 77(13.150)

B12 1310 (197-779)

Heamaglobin 122 (120-150)

Thank you

Do you have any results for your B12 - folate - VitD - Ferritin ? Thyroid hormones do not work well unless they are optimal - including T3.

Are you gluten Free - it could help with anti-bodies ...

Have just added your previous post when SeasideSusie said your conversion did not seem to be a problem !

Are you gluten free - apologies if I have missed that bit ! One of my daughters suffers from headaches when her Iron is low. Your Ferritin looks fine - I would ask your GP for a FULL Iron Profile as your Haemaglobin looks just in range ??

Yes you are right - they do all look good - but SeasideSusie did explain in your previous thread that your conversion from T4 to T4 was fine. Adding T3 may not be a good idea.

What side effects which I get if I did add T3?

We are all so individual so I cannot say - but it has been said you do not need T3 so you could end up being over-medicated ....

Have you read ‘stop the thyroid madness’ by Janie Bowthorpe?

Iron and cortisol as well as vitamins need to be optimal for thyroid symptoms to be relieved.

But - she emphasises that levo doesn’t work for many people. If your vitamins & meds are optimal and adrenals are supported yet you still Are symptomatic, She recommends trying natural deascicated thyroid . She has a website too where you will find loads of helpful info x

Well, I'm going to disagree with everyone, here. You do have a decent amount of T3 FOR SOME PEOPLE. But, it's possible that you need it higher. The solution to that would not be to raise your levo again, because your FT4 is already over-range. And your rT3 will be high. Now, whilst rT3 is inert, and possibly doesn't cause any problems, we really don't know what it does. So, maybe it is having an effect on you. So, what do you do? You reduce your levo by perhaps 12.5 mcg (you can do that by alternating 50 and 75 mcg), and add in 6.25 mcg T3. That's not exactly a straight swop, but to be honest, we don't really know what a straight swop would be. So, that will do for the time being. Then, in two weeks, increase your T3 by 6.25 mcg, and reduce your levo by another 12.5 mcg to 50 mcg a day. Is that doable? If so, all you have to do now is find your T3. :) Try writing a new post, asking people to PM you links to their trusted sources.

But, I must insist that you don't just add T3 to your present dose of levo, you you could over-medicate. You must reduce your levo slightly, at the same time. :)

So I was thinking the same thing reducing Levo to introduce t3.

So are you saying in the first two weeks i alternate Levo by taking 50mcg and 75mcg and 6.25mcg of t3?

Then after two weeks i should dose it as 50mcg of Levo and a further 6.25mcg of t3 making it 12.50mcg?

Am I getting this right ?

Yes, that's what I'm suggesting. :) Then, hold for six weeks, and retest.

Oh..wheh should I be taking it, at the same time as levo? I'm currently taking it at night now.

SlowDragon profile image

Many of us find taking T3 improves sleep, so try taking at night with Levo.

If that doesn't suit, then taking on waking is next option.

You can take it when you wish. But, if you take your levo at night, start out by taking it at the same time, see how it goes. :)
