Vit D problems

Hi.

I ve posted previously about my struggles with medication, and one of them was vitamin D supplements. I had tried a variety of versions but alway seemed to have a reaction. (Dizzy essential, stomach cramps, palpitations etc). I recently saw an endocrinologist and this came up, and he suggested trying a kids gummy version. We agreed it was worth a go as something was better than nothing. So..... Holland and Barrett, here in the UK do a kids version and I seem to be able to tolerate it.! It has no preservatives, salt, corn, milk, wheat, lactose, soya, Gluten, yeast, fish or porcine. Unfortunately it does have coconut oil and sulphites, but all in all something is better than nothing! It's only 200i.u per gummy so you need 2 but beggars can't be choosers! Hope this helps those of you who also struggle! 😁

It's good that you've found a form of Vit D that you can take without problems.

However, 400iu D3 daily is hardly enough to maintain a decent level. Are you trying to raise your level? What is it currently?

There are other gummies available in higher strengths, not specifically targetted to children.

Healthspan do a 1000iu dose healthspan.co.uk/products/s... size=90

and Vitafusion do a 2000iu dose amazon.co.uk/Vitafusion-Vit...

Don't forget that when taking D3 there are important cofactors needed - Vit K2-MK7 and magnesium vitamindcouncil.org/about-v...

Thank you, that is really useful. I have low vit D, but will have to dig out the actual figure....

Have you tried Better You vitamin D mouth spray? Comes in various strengths, from child upwards to 5000iu

It is good as avoids poor gut function

If you have Hashimoto's then you are likely to need substantially more than two gummie bears a day. (More like 10)

Do you supplement magnesium? Adding vitamin D may have exacerbated low magnesium level

I couldn't tolerate any vitamin D supplements until started supplementing magnesium for 2-3 weeks first. More info on my profile

My endo was completely stumped, said no one was intolerant of vitamin D.

It was help on here with info about magnesium deficiency that helped sort it.

I can't take vitd but I can just about tolerate a very low dose of the Better You spray but only a few times a week, no way every day. My levels range from 12-30.

I have tried drops too but couldn't tolerate them. Will look at the Magnesium factor.

Have you tried a vitamin D lamp?

No I seem to remember the reviews weren't very positive.

Well I got one and found that the symptoms I was getting still happened with lamp. I.e. It was the increase in Vitamin D, not the supplements causing issues. This gave me confidence to carry on with supplements

So I subsequently just gritted my teeth to get through the extreme bone pain (caused apparently as bones remineralise) Pain took 3-4 months to slowly subside.

I have Hashimoto's and gluten intolerant so perhaps because of this, I found I needed 6000iu daily for over 6 months to increase levels to around 100nmol

Palpitations were drastically and quickly improved by magnesium.

I have to be careful due to past hyperparathyroidism and hypercalcemia, I think my vitd set point is now low and that's where it wants to be, it doesn't cause me any noticeable problems.

Glad you mentioned this as I too have problems-I took a supplement last year which was ok but they have stopped making it. Ordered some others online-ebay/amazon and honestly felt awful-although one said no artificial fillers....feel like getting them tested in a lab to see exactly what is in there. Many have microcrystaline cellulose which is wood pulp-can't be good? My nhs prescribed ones were full of fillers-after 2 weeks felt awful: headaches/tension/anxiety hence trying alternative methods.

Not what you're looking for?
