How to take care of scar

hi everyone, just had the left side of my thyroid removed a couple of days ago. Apart from keeping it dry for a week I got no advice on how to treat the scar.

Are there are creams you recommend? When to start using them? Any advice will be welcome. Thanks!

The body is very well equipped to heal itself if left to it's own devices. No creams needed. Keep it dry as instructed and as if by magic the body will do all the work.

Hi there, hope you are recovering from your operation and feeling OK. When I had my operation 35 years ago I was advised to use pure lanolin cream and massage it into the scar 3 times a day. I have to say that my scar went completely flat . Obviously your wound needs to be healed before using anything on it.

Hi Blueberry heart,

Are your stitches still intact? I was told to leave it be until they're removed.

The endocrine nurse I saw put a light dressing over my wound after the stitches were removed. Then after two weeks I could remove it and gently massage along the scar.

But I would first leave it alone to heal as others have said!

Are you under the care of a nurse or hospital clinic? Best to follow their guidance.

Best wishes.

thanks everyone. Yes I won’t do anything for now. Just wondering what I can do to help after it first heals and the lanolin advice seems good. I seem to have some self dissolving glue so wont need to do anything to it. Have a light dressing that should come off when I first wash it which I won’t do for at least a week. For now just resting and letting my body do the work 😊

Once fully healed I was told about Bio Oil. You gentle massage a little into the scar daily..... I have found it very helpful.

However I would ask at your post op follow up about managing your scar.

hi. I had my thyroid removed 12 weeks ago. I waited until about week 6 when all the dissolving stitches had dissolved and I started rubbing Bio Oil Gel into the scar. I hope you are ok after your surgery. This next bit of your journey might be rough to put it politely!

thanks! What would you say has made it rough for you? I am going through this whilst breastfeeding a 4 month baby so very very tired. Trying to be positive and hope that I might not need hormone replacement as I still have half of the thyroid. And still waiting for biopsy result. Wishing you all the best in your journey!

when my plaster first came off the skin looked like two pieces of pork belly fat sewn together. I couldn’t even look at it. But the Bio Oil Gel or liquid works. Anything works really. There’s no magic lotions and lotions. I run it in once a day. 1 minute at most. My scar is 3-4 inches long. God feeding a baby and thyroid surgery you must be shattered. Getting the meds right in this side is hard that’s what I am finding. Love to you and your beautiful new baby

Our dermatologist/surgeon recommends very gentle massage with E45 cream once surgical wounds are healed. Once you get used to touching them it's fine!

Just let it heal and once healed then you can get some scar cream. I didn’t need to do anything to my scar it sorta looks so-so anyway I don’t look at it like a scar to get rid of I consider it my battle wound.
