I’m thinking of trying 5-HTP. Are we ok taking this with having hashimotos and has anyone had and benefits themselves on this supplement? Thanks
5-HTP dietary supplements help raise serotonin levels in the brain. Since serotonin helps regulate mood and behavior, 5-HTP may have a positive effect on sleep, mood, anxiety, appetite, and pain sensation. ... As a supplement, 5-HTP is made from the seeds of an African plant called Griffonia simplicifolia.

I have suffered from anxiety all my life, with periodic breakdowns where chronic anxiety turns overnight into panic disorder with depression.
Tried this twice. It makes me more anxious, even 50mg before bed.
Tap it into the search box on this forum. You will see others find it helps them with sleep & low mood.
I have self medicated with SAMe & that pulled me out of the panic/depression state.I took 200mgs & found I didn't need to raise.Took it daily for a year.
This time it had no effect & I took Sertraline,an SSRI.Still weaning off a very low dose after 18months,
Thanks I’ve seen that but ppl have mixed reviews. But I like kalms and it’s in them. I only buy off amazon as I know I can get the best quality supplements and next day delivery 😊
It might or might not work for you. Depends on genetic make up, whether you are actually low in serotonin and how good your methylation is. Also be aware that it may work at first and then send you in the opposite direction with too much serotonin, so just listen to your body. It makes me want to kill things: children, neighbours, other drivers ...
I do brilliantly on 5-HTP. It changed my life for the better. I've been on a low dose - 50mg every evening - for about 6 or 7 years now. I know it doesn't work for everyone. I know that it works for some people but they need much more than me.
I've never had any success with Valerian - it just gives me a really bad headache and doesn't help me with sleep.
One thing I would like to try but never have is SAMe.
SAMe worked really well for me for a year, just the starting dose of 200mgs.As advised,I took B6 & B12 daily with it.I bought I a tried & tested brand, individually sealed tablets as recommended.
This time I crashed it didn't do the trick & I know its to do with the methylation cycle but trying to read up about methylation & MTHFR switches my brain off, though I have done the 23&me gene test & know I have SNPs.
I'm now slowly weaning off a low dose of Sertraline, which has been fantastic for my anxiety, which turns into depression when I cannot handle the overload.
As SSRIs don't go well with thyroid medication,I will only use it if I crash aagin, but withdrawal needs to be handled carefully.
