If you want to try an increase then do it in 1/4 grain increments, any larger dose increases and you may miss your sweet spot.
If you change or increase your medication it is recommended to monitor your levels with a blood test after 6-8 weeks, i.e. TSH FT4 FT3 (your TSH level will be suppressed on NDT). From your last post - 3 grains is equivalent to about 180mcg Levo & you were on 175mcg. I find I need slightly less in the Summer months.
An increase of 1 grain in one go is a big jump. If you are feeling better, it is best to stay on 3 grains for 6-8 weeks then do a blood test before doing any further increase. If your FT3 are not at 75% of the range and you have symptoms, this means there is perhaps a scope for an increase and this is usually done 1/4 grain at a time, then wait 7-10 days before adding another 1/4 grain, only if needed, otherwise wait for 8 weeks and follow with a blood test.
Thank you brilliant advice
researcherUK Yes - definitely don’t increase by one grain. I did this on the advice of my Dr and it was a big mistake. My free T3 went way over range and I felt shocking. It was a confusing time as actually felt as though I was under-medicated socthen I had to come off all hormone replacement and restart at two before building up again.
I was on 125mg thyroxine for 16 years, then T3 only for 2 years. Now on 3 grains of Thiroid.Am going to do blood tests before deciding whether I need a raise:not sure if am at my sweet spot!
Will test TSH,FT3,FT4.Going to test antibodies, too,as not been tested since 1998
Does gp test you ?
Hi
Yes bloods are essential but in the meantime are you using a basal thermometer and monitoring your levels.
You are aiming for circa 36,6- see Dr Rind metabolic therapy
Or Dr Sarah Myhill . Com search under conducting the cfs orchestra and scroll down to the red section on how to monitor your results.
It was very helpful for me when I swapped to ndt. I started too high, lowered it and used my thermometer. I was v surprised how low mine was. Now with the increases it’s far better. Also helps you see if the adrenals are out too.
Good luck
After 16 years on thyroxine,my temperature has refused to budge from 36.2,even when on too much T3.It happens apparently, after prolonged adrenal insufficiency. Will check now I've been on NDT a few months, when I get home.
