Hi! Does anyone know what is the safe Vit D dose for optimum thyroid function? I am reading varying recommendations and do not want to over do it to prevent toxicity.
Thoughts appreciated!

Interested to know as well! I currently take 1 x 400iu but could take up to 3 of those a day according to the bottle.
Where have you been reading ? I do not think it is about a safe dose for Thyroid Function - but a safe dose for your body. That is why it is suggested here on the Forum that you have your VitD tested from time to time when supplementing to ensure you do not go too high in the range. Some people need more - some less to reach an optimal level of 100/150 in the UK. VitD is fat soluble and can be stored in the body - unlike some other vitamins.

Thanks for the helpful advice
How much vitamin D people need to take to increase their levels really depends on how poor their current levels are.
To work out how much you should supplement do both the following steps :
1) Convert your level from nmol/L (non-US units) to ng/mL (US units of measurement). To do this use this link :

2) Once you know your level in ng/mL use this link to calculate how high a dose of vitamin D you need - it not only depends on your current level but your body weight in pounds :

Thank you! That's quite complex. Seems like I need to get my levels tested. Appreciate your advice.
You need to take an appropriate dose to achieve, or maintain, a level of 100-150nmol/L or 40-60ng/ml which is recommended by the Vit D Council.
If you state your current Vit D level I can suggest an appropriate dose.
Don't forget D3's important cofactors K2-MK7 and magnesium. D3 aids absorption of calcium from food and K2-MK7 directs the calcium to bones and teeth where it is needed and away from arteries and soft tissues where it can be deposited and cause problems.
D3 and K2 are fat soluble so should be taken with the fattiest meal of the day, D3 four hours away from thyroid meds.
Magnesium helps D3 to work and comes in different forms, check to see which would suit you best and as it's calming it's best taken in the evening, four hours away from thyroid meds

Check out the other cofactors too.
Thank you for your comprehensive advice. I haven't had my vit D levels tested. I am just taking it as part of a vegan multivitamin supplement which is dosed at 200 U.L (100% NRV).
If you want to prevent toxicity then you really need to know your level. As we make Vit D naturally from the sun, some of us need no supplement from about April to October and then just a maintenance dose during November to March. Some of us don't make enough from the sun, or can't tolerate the sun, so our level will be low and we'll need to supplement all year, some needing more in winter than summer.
Vit D is one of the important nutrients we need at an optimal level to help prevent many diseases - see the Disease Incidence Prevention chart, scroll down to the link to the chart in nmol/L under Additional Versions grassrootshealth.net/docume...
However, if that is 200IU (international units) you are taking then it won't make much difference at all, it wouldn't actually help a sunburnt flea.
By any chance is it the H&B own brand vegan multivitamin and mineral tablet?
Yes it is. I use it because I have difficulty swallowing large tablets and numerous ones so I wanted a multi which doesn't contain iodine and that was the only one I can find. I also take the supplements that aren't contained in the multi but struggle as I seem to have a substantial gag reflex when swallowing pills whatever size. I chew my thyroid s so that's fine but I can't tolerate chewing the supplements. I think I'll buy the vit D spray then, shame they don't all come in sprays.
Multivitamins generally area waste of time as they don't contain enough of anything to do any good and tend to use the cheapest and wrong form of active ingredients, plus as usual with H&B supplements there are myriads of excipients/fillers. B12 is the cyanocobalamin form and methylcobalamin is best there is folic acid and methylfolate is best, it has zinc oxide which is the cheapest form and the sort used in sunscreen. It also contains calcium and iron which has both should be tested for and only supplemented if deficient. The iron means nothing else can be absorbed as it needs to be taken 2 hours away from everything, and the calcium stops the iron being absorbed.
Thanks!
It depends how well your can absorb vitamin D supplements if taking tablets
Very many on here, especially with Hashimoto's find vitamin D mouth spray is more reliable way of absorbing vitamin D.
Every body varies considerably how much they need and absorb.
If you have coeliac or gluten intolerance then likely to need more.
Testing twice yearly recommended
