Vitamin D dose to raise levels

My thyroid is back in normal range, but due to still having symptoms, my endocrinologist has also checked my vitamin D. I have just had my results back and my level was 31.2 (normal range 50 - 100). What level of vitamin D supplements would you expect to be appropriate to bring my levels back up?

OctoberGirlie67,

I suggest 10,000iu D3 daily for 6-8 weeks then reduce to 5,000iu daily and retest 6 months after you started supplementing. 75-200 nmol/L is replete and most people feel well around 100.

At least 5000 IU's daily - perhaps after loading doses.

Seek out the correct measurement on the chart above. Also seek the chart indicating levels required to prevent serious conditions and various cancers - again on the above website.

You may also wish to explore the opposing thinking about VitD which says if you are TH1 dominant then VitD is not for you :-(

You will also need to take VitK2 to keep the improved levels of calcium from food - being directed to your bones and teeth - and not left circulating in the blood. Not good !

I would advise start on a low dose rather than diving in with mega amounts. Vitd supplements are not suitable for everyone as shown on lots of posts, some people cannot tolerate them and end up feeling very unwell. I am one of those so my vitd varies from 12 to 30 ish and that seems to be my set point range.

Interested in your comment about not tolerating vitamin D. I struggled trying it, (1000 IU suspect was too low a dose) and gave up.

(See my profile for bit more)

Endo wanted to put me on 10,000 IU daily - was very reluctant to try that.

However now I am supplementing magnesium, I am reconsidering trying Vit D again at say 2000 IU or even 5000 IU. Meanwhile sunbathing to up levels.

Waiting to see a gastroenterologist re recently discovered gluten intolerance as possible cause of low Vit D / magnesium. Was finding it increasingly difficult to walk, but this is now improving since gluten free & adding magnesium.
