Hi guys i have been supplementing with floravital liquid iron for 7 weeks now and are due for a blood test next week to check if they have risen from a measley 10, i have been told previously that should leave the iron off for 1 week before testing, doesnt this defeat the object though? Im going to start feeling very dire again. Surely i would loose a good weeks worth of iron? Help.🌟🌟

Rmichelle,

The point is to see what iron level is circulating not what the level is just after supplementing.

That makes sense! I am dreading it, i did check with gp but i dont know how accurate info was- he said nhs states 24 hours is enough and fast?

Rmichelle,

Advice I've seen says to stop taking iron 7 days prior to testing. I don't know anything about an iron test being a fasting test.

Rmichelle,

You shouldn't feel worse because you don't take iron tablets for a few days.

If you feel a lot worse when you stop your iron tablets then it suggests your iron levels are still much too low. if your levels were fine you would be fine without your supplements.

It is still a good idea to do iron testing when supplementing just in case problems are occurring that you aren't aware of.

Your GP is correct that the NHS suggests leaving off iron supplements for 24 hours then doing a fasting test for iron-related testing. If you are convinced that doing without your supplements is going to make you suffer, then just leave them off for 24 hours and do a fasting test.

When you get your iron levels up closer to optimal then you could test again having stopped supplements for 7 days.

There is really no benefit in torturing yourself!

I have only been supplementing for 7 weeks and my iron level was a measley 10 and the range started at 8. I think im going to go with 24 hours and fasting being i have only just started. Hope it does not sound disrespectful towards clutters advice. I woyld feel happier with 24 hours.😊😊
