Private blood results

My doctors have been so unhelpful it is unbelievable. I have had symptoms of under active thyroid for over ten years now but they have been fobbing me off every time and actually made me out as if it was all in my head. I was due to have my bloods done again so when booking the appointment I specifically asked for thyroid to be included again but got a call back to say no doctor won't put them in as my results were perfectly normal the last time they were done back last august. The bloods were taken in the afternoon as I had not been told to do them first thing and the results were

Free T4 14 (9 - 21)

TSH 4.1 (0.2 - 4.5)

So I decided to do private bloods. I did the test on Monday morning and got the results this afternoon.

Thyroid stimulating hormone *6.55 (0.27 - 4.20)

Free Thyroxine 12.7 (12.00 - 22.00)

Total thyroxine (T4) 89.1 (59.00 - 154.00)

Free T3 4.05 (3.10 - 6.80)

Thyroglobulin antibody 11.500 (0.00 - 115.00)

Thyroid Peroxidase antibodies <9.0 (0.00 - 34.00)

I have tried to get an appointment with the doctors but they are fully booked

They should listen to you with these results. Though you don't have high thyroid antibodies, so not apparently Hashimoto's (though you can have Hashimoto's with low antibodies. You might need thyroid scan to definitely rule it out)

Have you had vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested? If not see if GP will test these

Like many people on here, who've been in similar situations as yourself self-medicate. Lots of patients would be nervous of doing so but they buy their own thyroid hormones too. Before the blood tests were introduced we were diagnosed upon our clinical symptoms alone and give a dessicated thyroid hormone (commonly called NDT) on a trial basis. If we felt an improvement we continued and it was increased slowly.

The problem if you are in the UK, doctors only look at the TSH and T4, and in other countries when the TSH goes above 3+ we will be prescribed levothyroxine. In UK we have to wait till the TSH is 10, so that could take a very long time. Doctors no longer are aware of any c;linical symptoms and how disabling they can be.

Your GP should test B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate.

Thank you for responding. I actually had my bloods taken yesterday for updated vit d etc. As I get b12 injections every 12 weeks, vit d tablets as low, folate tablets as low. The first time I was told my vit d was low got told that there is nothing that can be taken for it I would just need to move somewhere sunnier that is how good my docs are. Unfortunately I don't have an option of changing practices.
