Twitching eye causes?

mistygrey profile image
18 Replies

I have been having a twitching right eye the past few weeks now and it is very irritating!

It just seems to be the one eye however my eyes are very dry both of them. I have Hashimotos and Hypothyroidism, and on T4/T3 combo of medication.

Is this a lack of magnesium perhaps causing this? and how do you know if your Cortisol levels are bad with regards to your adrenals as I am also feeling terribly exhausted the last month, maybe I need to up my T3 also as on a very low dose.

Typical magnesium lack. Some nice epsom salt baths should help and maybe some seasalt in water ( a teaspoon full per 300mls).Not sure that it would make you exhausted but up your magnesium first and see if that helps all round. Get it in anyway you can.

Thanks Mandy, I had a nice Epsom salts bath last night but maybe it isn't enough.

Is there a safe magnesium supplement to take or do you also need to take Calcium with this too as one compliments the other?

Assuming your kidneys are working, you could try a magnesium supplement. Lots of people are deficient, but testing is not reliable.

To choose a good magnesium supplement, read these links and choose something that appeals to you :

My personal choice of magnesium supplement is magnesium citrate. I take a dose each evening which supplies 200mg - 400mg, depending on how much twitching I've suffered from that day.

Thank you, I will look into this.

Does the magnesium supplement help? I don't want to take too many supplements but I definitely need to try something for this eye twitching as it's getting to me!

Definitely. I am affected mainly in my legs, and trying to sleep while they twitch is practically impossible.

There is another condition that affects (mainly) the legs, referred to as "restless legs syndrome", although it can affect the arms as well in some people. I reduced the severity of that by optimising my iron levels. But to get rid of more of the twitching I had to take magnesium supplements as well.

This is what magnesium deficiency does :

Iron is another supplement I struggle in finding a good one that is enough. My ferritin usually is always low on blood tests I currently use Holland and Barretts Solgar gentle iron as I didn't tolerate the stronger Iron, can you recommend a good iron that is gentle and enough?

I wrote about iron and ferritin (iron stores) in a couple of posts in reply to this post :

Regarding what you can supplement with, you might want to try ferrous fumarate 210mg, which can be bought at pharmacies or online without prescription. Search the forum for references to ferrous fumarate 210mg, it gets mentioned a lot, but take note of the info on when it is safe to supplement in my link just above.

I take some vitamins called nutrience. thye are fully balanced and contain everything in a drink morning and night. Quiet expensive but does have everything in it. I have looked up this twitching business and there are other possible causes. It might be worth seeing optician about it if it does not clear up with some more magnesium. lack of magnesium can make you very tired.

Do you have a link to the product you are taking that you can post. I can't find a supplement with this name.

Eye twitches could also be linked to Low B12. Do you know your level ?

mistygrey profile image
mistygrey in reply to Marz

No I don't know my levels for this I would need to get checked, I have an appointment with my Endo in two weeks so could ask her to test me in this, do you have this?

When B12 is below 500 it can become a neurological issue. Mine bumped along the bottom part of the range for years. I had complex back surgery which was possibly linked to low B12 having had my Terminal Ileum removed over 40 years ago. My legs are now numb from mid-calf downwards ....

Do you have gut issues ?

mistygrey in reply to Marz

Oh dear I am sorry to hear that.

I think my B12 is below 500 but GPs in uk think this is normal and always palm you off. I do have acid reflux and IBS/gut issues also yes unfortunately

in reply to mistygrey

supplementing B12 has made such a difference to me and my blood is normal range 490 I think when tested.

You are entitled to have copies of all YOUR results with ranges. This is the law :-) You should NOT be palmed off - it is your health. Please read the link below - the neurological Signs and Symptoms come first - so scroll down the page to view ....

Please look at the Menu on the left of the page and click onto FILMS and watch the videos to really appreciate the seriousness of LOW B12. Look at Dr Carr and see how close he was to death before being diagnosed with B12 Deficiency. Drug companies cannot make money out of vitamins - they cannot be patented.

Do not leave these very important matters to your GP or Endo - they rarely have a clue. Private Testing is available through Thyroid UK and used by 100's on this Forum :-)

Click onto my name in blue above and then Click Posts to see how often I talk about B12 ....

I am not a Medic - just a Hashi's gal with LOW B12 due to surgery with Crohns and TB.
