T3 question

I finally managed to get my endo to prescribe me T3 & about to start taking it :)

Are there any "rules" about what not to take with it, time between taking it & food / vitamins, etc. like there are with Levo ??

Wanting to make sure I get the best benefit from it & considering the Dr's know so little about interactions with food, etc. & Levo I thought I would cross check the "it'll be fine to take anytime" approach of the Dr to real world experience.

TIA

Have you had vitamin D, folate and B12 tested. Are you supplementing if these are too low

I see you have high ferritin.

As you have Hashimoto's are you on strictly gluten free diet

Usually vitamins need to be optimal first, plus gluten free if affected.

What dose Levo are you taking and what was last results? TSH, FT4 and FT3

Start very slowly. Eg 1/4 of 20mcg tablet once or possibly twice daily.

I actually started with 1/8th twice day for first few days

Like Levo take on empty stomach and then nothing apart from water for at least an hour after

I agree with other posters but just wanted to say avoid any magnesium supplements (if you take them) for at least 4 hours - some 6 hours - Epocrates.com is a good place to look for interactions. You hear about iron and calcium clashing but never Mg - I found out the 'hard way' that it definitely prevents absorption.

Well done for getting some prescribed - at this very moment I've been told by the endo I should have some but he won't prescribe it!!! and neither will my GP, so wondering what to do next!

Budd-james,

If you're prescribed 10mcg T3 you can take it with your Levothyroxine dose. If it's more than 10mcg buy a pillcutter and divide into 2 doses and take the first dose with Levothyroxine and the second at bedtime away from food, drink, meds and supplements as per Levothyroxine.

Thanks everyone.

Slightly complex in that I've been off Levo for about 4 weeks now due to yet another allergic / intolerance reaction (to liquid Levo this time) so Endo didn't even bother to do blood tests.

Have been prescribed 5mcg once a day for a week to see if I have any reaction to that then have to goto 5mcg twice a day for a month - blood tests at that point & another endo visit to see whats what.

Recently been diagnosed with polycythaemia & hemochromatosis so am on no supplements of any kind or any other meds. Totally gluten, dairy & grain free.

Not what you're looking for?
