Hyperthyroidism new results

I have had an over active thyroid I’m on carbimazole and my latest results are

Tsh 4.07 (0.27-4.2)

Ft4 14 (12-24)

Ft3 4.8 (3.1-6.8)

I’m not feeling 100% still!! I can’t remember is it ft4 that I should be concentrating on, is this the one to feel more balanced should be towards the higher end of the ref range?

Thaanks 😊

Lisa254,

TSH is high in range and FT4 low in range so a slight dose reduction might be worth requesting.

Thank you, my tsh is at its highest it has been since I have been diagnosed 8 months ago, I was beginning to feel like I am having hypo symptoms so I think ur right, I will speak with my endo 😊

I assume you're on titration ? (ie carbimazole only, no levo ?)

How much carbi are you on at the moment, and what were the previous results ? If you're still on a high dose, you could end up with your thyroid levels below range by your next test, but this will be due to over-medication, so should be easy to resolve. It can be difficult to get the dosage right, I ended up under range on one test, so they reduced from 40 mg to 10mg, but I was back over again six weeks later, and am currently on 20mg.

Have you seen the endo since these results were available ?

It's excess T3 which makes me feel worst. My FT3 levels came down more slowly than FT$, which probably didn't make it any easier to get the dosage right.

If you feel really rubbish, ask them to bring your next blood test forward, especially if you think you are edging towards being hyper again. It's definitely worth being 'tuned-in' to your symptoms, I feel quite a different sort of rubbish when I'm hyper as opposed to over-medicated/hypo !

Hi valarian,

I’m on titration carbimazole only 10mg at the moment.

I started on 20mg then 15mg then 10mg and about 2 months after this I got ill and a gp put me back on 15mg (even though my results were still in normal range) this made me worse so I went back to 10mg since end of October... my last blood test was towards end of November tsh 2.71 and ft4 18 (they didn’t do ft3). I am due to see my endo in 2 weeks hopefully he will reduce it 😊

did your GP consult the endo before reducing the dose ? If you're under a specialist, the GP shouldn't really mess with the plan.

Has this been confirmed as Graves' - via antibody tests ?

Lisa254 profile image
Lisa254 in reply toValarian

No ...it wasn’t my Actual gp, it’s abit of a long story but my original endo left the business when I got really ill and the increase happened, she had told me to google my questions i was asking her and then wrote a report to my gp saying I wasn’t on carbimazole and nothing wrong with my thyroid so I’d be looked after by my gp oh and she said I need psychological help as I was emotionally unstable!! Which was a joke think she got me mixed up with someone else!!

Anyways I have since seen 2 other endos and just been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism by one and mild Graves by the other as I have minimal elevated antibodies for both graves and hashis from my bloods taken in October. I may request another test... I don’t think any doctors want to give an exact diagnosis now a days!!

sounds like a nightmare.

The endos' diagnoses aren't contradictory - Graves' is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism in the UK.

20mg/day of Carbimazole is quite a low starting dose from end endo (GPs sometimes prescribe lower doses while patients are waiting for their first endo appointment, but generally carbimazole is supposed to be supervised by a specialist).

Having both sets of antibodies isn't uncommon - this is a useful article thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/about_....

Lisa254 in reply toValarian

Yes it was!!.... my first appt (4momths after diagnosis) with the endo said that my gp has controlled it well as my results went back to normal within a month of diagnosis but we obviously didn’t get on for some reason or her mind was elsewhere so who knows whether it was right or wrong!!

Thanks for the link I’ll have a read 😊

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/about_...

If it still doesn't work (I managed to access it via the link myself, so may be a browser issue), go to the thyroiduk site, and click on 'thyroid antibodies' under the 'about the thyroid' tab on the left hand side.

Rmichelle in reply toLisa254

Yes you will be fine and you are so right it is not you it is the illnes, i kept telling myself that when i 1st had panic attacks, have not had one in 3 months as carbi gave that the boot.

Hi how’s u, how did u get on with your bloods? X

Rmichelle profile image
Rmichelle in reply toLisa254

Ah, went to pick up my bloods yesterday and they have lost my thyroid panel again!! It has happened 3 times now at my hospital, i can tell you i was not happy and phoned the bloods department at the hospital but it fell on deaf ears, they were not bothered so i have to get them done again! My iron panel come through and it is what i expected ferritin dire at 10 but i am now supplementing that and got to say it is working with some of the symptons. How are you though?

Lisa254 profile image
Lisa254 in reply toRmichelle

Oh my god I bet you were fuming!! How can they loose test information it’s crazy huh!!

That’s so good that you are feeling more balanced with ur supplements it’s such a fine line to get our bodies back in sync.

I’m ok thanks my endo didn’t call yesterday as another doc was off sick so will speak with him Monday.... I really hope he will drop my meds I just feel like I’m being poisoned by this carb. I have lost all my get up and go and want to do things and I went out for a walk yesterday (had to make myself) and just felt panicky and overwhelmed until I was a couple of mins from home. It’s so annoying I hope all the mental side of this illness goes as I start to feel better, it’s so unlike me!! Xx

Rmichelle profile image
Rmichelle in reply toLisa254

I understand how you feel as i suffered alot with being anxious and panicky when really hyper and i know its crazy but i used to be really hung up on the fact if i went out could people tell i was ill or would they notice i tremble? Crazy really but it is not you it is this horrid disease, i love to be out and about and always pushed myself to go out even though if it was for a walk around the block. Dont let it beat you. Hope you get it sorted you dont need to be on 10mgs or have you cut it down further?

Lisa254 profile image
Lisa254 in reply toRmichelle

It’s horrible huh!! I don’t know why I have it as my bloods r border hypo, unless panic and anxiety and not wanting to do anything r symptoms of hypo too.

Yes I know what u mean I look in the mirror and do not recognise myself as I’m so pale and dark eyes now I remember going into a shop before Xmas I said to my sister everyone is looking at me (I think it was my massive teddy bear coat taking up the majority of the shop they were looking at) it was horrible!

Yes I’m still on 10mg I didn’t want to mess with it as it was only a short time until I speak with the endo. My bloods have all been in range since June last year as I’m sure it’s the carb being too high that’s made me so ill over the last 4 months but who am I to say 😬

Rmichelle profile image
Rmichelle in reply toLisa254

Teddy bear coat!! Lol. Anxiety and panic is a sympton of hypo aswell, all to do with hormones unfortunatley but i would say my symptons are more physical than mentally, i am pretty much sure that your endo cant keep you on 10mgs it would be insane to do so, i understand you dont want to mess with meds-somevpeoe feel more secure when being told to do so by a specialist and others will just do it, i did it twice as i could never get hold of my endos and thought i am just becoming more hypo. Im sure you will feel better on a lower dose and give it 4 weeks to kick in and change things and you will feel a little less anxious.put your feetbup sleep, rest, watch a film, miserable day here it is pouring down, here if you need to speak.x😊

Lisa254 profile image
Lisa254 in reply toRmichelle

Ah that makes sense thanks...I have only had the mental symptoms over the last 2 months or so weirdly!!

Yes I decreased my dose back in Nov and it took a good 5/6weeks if slow improvements ... wish it could happen like tomoz 😂

Yes it miserable here too ment to snow next week 😳 hope u have an enjoyable weekend xx
