Help and advice needed for switching from levothyroxine to NDT.

Hello good people,

this is my first post on this site so apologies if this particular query has already been answered.

I´ve suffered tremendously with thyroid malfunction (hashimoto´s) for the last 18 years and the last two have been particulary tough.

Last year my blood analysis showed almost no T3 or T4, a TSH of 156.0 which made the doctors very incredulous, the test was repeated twice to show the same results.

My dosage of levothyroxine was changed significantly and the bloods came back as within the normal range from then on. However, the symptoms such as fatigue, skin issues, digestive problems, severe muscle cramps, gallbladder malfunction, anxiety and depression have never improved. I have been on a Gluten, sugar and dairy free diet for a long time and have noticed very little difference.

I only recently discovered the alternative treatment of using NDT in place of levothyroxine and I want to switch over but i can´t find an endocrinologist in my city with any knowledge whatsoever of this type of treatment.

The only product i´ve found which is within my means to purchase regularly is Thyroid-S, which seems to be the most cost-effective option and has generally great reviews.

My question is if I currently take 137mcg of levo daily, how much Thyroid-S should I take? Should I stop the levo gradually, lowering my dose and replacing it little by little with Thyroid-S or can I simply stop taking levo altogether and switch directly to Thyroid-S.

Ideally, I would like an endocrinologist to help me through this process but unfortunately there are only 3 in my city and none of them use NDTs to treat their patients.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Andy.

Welcome to the forum, AndyPDD5.

130mcg Levothyroxine is equivalent to 2 grains NDT. I would reduce Levothyroxine to 62mcg and introduce 1 grain NDT to see how you tolerate it. If all is well you can stop the Levothyroxine after 2 weeks and increase NDT to 2 grains. If you feel the need increase dose by 1/2 grain at two week intervals but hold at 3 grains for 6-8 weeks and have a thyroid test including FT3 before increasing further.

I switched from Levo 150 mcg to NDT in 2016. I just stopped the levo one day and started on NDT thyroid s the next, 1/2 grain then after 10 days increased to 1 grain and so on until I felt better.

It's up to you I had help on this site but no Doctor or Endo's advice, the only way I have felt better is to listen to the informed people on here.

I have no thyroid and now feel well.

Thanks!!

I´m ordering Thyroid-S today so i´ll be making the switch as soon as it arrives and i´m looking forward to seeing the results. I have been given much better advice from the people on here than all the endos and docs i´ve visited to date.

Thanks for the input.
