I am new here. I have an underactive thyroid and Multiple Sclerosis and I seem to periodically have low ferritin levels but normal haemoglobin.
My level in October wasn't that low...was 12 - but I was prescribed iron pills and had to stop after after a week as I was being sick and had diarrhoea. Have tried different formulations but just cannot tolerate them. Decided with my GP that would increase iron rich foods as much as possible and we would see how it went. The thing is she didn't say how often I should get them checked.
Does anyone have any idea before I bother her? My ferritin level has been lower before (5) but that was several years ago and for some reason I was able to tolerate iron pills then!?!
If you can't tolerate iron tablets perhaps your GP can arrange an iron infusion? I don't think it is worth testing ferritin more frequently than 4 monthly as it takes that long for red blood cells to die off and renew.
