Poppy115,

If they have already removed gluten from their diet, it needs to be reintroduced in more than one meal a day, everyday for at least 6 weeks prior to the coeliac disease blood test, for an accurate result. Read more about getting diagnosed with coeliac disease here.

Are you still eating gluten at the moment? If so, keep eating gluten until you have been tested. If the blood test comes back positive DO NOT cut out gluten until after your gut biopsy.

If you have already cut out gluten, then as clutter says, you need to eat gluten every day for at least 6 weeks before you're tested. You can supercharge it by eating a lot of gluten for a shorter period of 2 weeks, but it depends on what you can handle.

Does the gut biopsy hurt?

Hi im celiac and have had a gut biopsy and i just felt a luttle sore inside but you will be fine. You just need to eat one gluten meal a day to pump up your gluten. I too have hashimotos but diagnosed with celiac first and then thyroid and hashis followed.

Good luck.xx

My OH is the celiac in our household - he didn't think it was painful, just a bit weird.

The most important thing is to keep eating gluten in the meantime. You need to eat the equivalent of 1 slice of bread a day (you can have more than that if you like though).

Push for endoscopy to be done within 6 week guidelines.

They should offer option of mild sedative, then you don't feel a thing

According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are coeliac, but over 80% find gluten free diet helps significantly. Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)

So regardless of coeliac result, would be a good idea after test, to go strictly gluten free for at least 3-6 months. See if it helps, if it does stick on it

But don't be surprised that GP or endo never mention gut, gluten or low vitamins. Hashimoto's is very poorly understood

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms, help gut heal and slowly lower TPO antibodies
