Looking for a doctor who would consider T3 therapy

RobinPaulWilliams profile image

I have a strong suspicion that I have a T4-T3 conversion issue. I am living in Italy, but coming back to the UK for Xmas. I wonder whether anyone can recommend a doctor/endo who would be open enough to prescribe T3, if indicated? I would preferably like to find someone in the South-West or South Wales, but London would also do...

Many thanks for your help

Robin

RobinPaulWilliams,

As 28 x 20mcg will cost you in excess of £258 you would be better off getting a prescription from an Italian doctor where it should cost <€35 or buying T3 online without a prescription.

If you still want to see a UK endo email dionne.fulcher@thyroiduk.org for a list of member recommended endos but do check with their offices that they prescribe T3 before you confirm an appointment.

Clutter, that’s a really helpful response.

I have the same problem. Where can I purchase online ? I’m from the Uk. Or can I get a doctor from another country to prescribe ?

Thanks so much

From my own personal experience over a 35 year period, endocrinologists have always been reluctant to prescribe T3. I even moved to be nearer a large teaching hospital (Birmingham) in a desperate effort to be correctly diagnosed and medicated. The Professor of Endocrinology I saw nearly killed me. However, in June 2017 I paid for the private DIO2 thyroid genetic test to confirm my own instinct, as you have. It did return positive as a fault from one parent. I was then able to wave my results print out in front of both my GP and endocrinologist. I then had my T3 prescription issued on the NHS. I used Regenerus Labs.

If you do decide to go ahead with the private genetic test which is saliva only and not blood, you would need to phone or email Regenerus as they have a myriad of thyroid gene tests. They are helpful & friendly. It's the DIO2 (three letters & one number). It costs around £160. This price includes the legally required counselling. This is because some genetic test results can be traumatic & life changing, but our DIO2 test isn’t really. You need to request that Regenerus supplies the counsellor as you don't want any information going to any of your doctors. The Regenerus counsellor phoned me with my result and talked for about half an hour.

Heterozygous = one parent, homozygous = both parents

Once you have paid and received the Regenerus test, remember NOT to write any doctor’s details on that form, or the results may get sent there. Leave that question blank or write “Regenerus” regarding the results. I phoned them about this and they told me to leave it blank. You are in fact paying an extra £50 or so, so that Regenerus can provide their counsellor.

The results take around 3 weeks to return. They then email through your results, you can print out as many copies as you wish, and use them as you wish. Good luck

Fab advice! When I had it done I gave my German GP's address (with his consent), Regenerus was happy with that. It is wonderful to be able to stop any T3 discussion from the start with the print out.

£110 well spent!

If you could get a prescription from your Italian doctor the pharmacy could order it in from France for you. It is cheap here and only costs 6.96 euros for 2 x boxes of T3.

Thanks Bunnybean.

My Italian family doctor believes that my symptoms are all in my imagination, but, should I get a professional prescription from a UK endo, I would hope that he would agree to write out a prescription for T3 for me... He's a friendly guy, but one of those that only looks at numbers on the page (ie he's only concerned that TSH, FT4 and FT3 are within 'parameters')
