Scalloped tongue

Hi,

I have noticed over the past couple months that my tongue has become ridged at the edges and I've been increasing thirsty.

Also, I am finding my temperature is all over the place, I seem to be getting very hot and unable to cool down then be freezing after.

Is any of these related to each other or to my thyroid at all?

I take 100 levothyroxin daily and my last blood test was 'normal'

Thanks in advance.

Yes they can be related, especially the temperature and scalloped tongue which happens with thyroid patients due to the tongue swelling.

When you say your blood results are 'normal' this the 'opinion' of whoever said it to you.

Have you got your most recent blood results to post?...TSH, T4, T3 if possible. Also important, B12 (which can also be cause of swollen tongue if low,) Vit D, Ferritin and folate??

Post whatever results that you have here to begin with, that's the only way the people with knowledge here can help you, and they will do.

Sounds like you're under medicated.

Hi, my TSH is 3, B12 is 416, folate is 5.2 and my doctor won't test t3 or t4

Check your T3, reverse T3 and active B12 you may have to do this privately. ThyroidUK website has details.

Explore insulin resistance and perhaps modify diet accordingly to lower inflammation I.e gluten and dairy free Dr Sarah Myhill’s latest book PK diet might be of interest?

Hi, I am already gluten and lactose free. Will look into private test as my gp won't test these

This could be due to a few things which are all correlated.

When there are high levels of toxins and inflammation in the body, the tongue will start to swell and enlarge and will push against the sides of the teeth. This results in the tongue having indentations on the sides or something we call “scalloping”.

Toxins can also affect the thyroid in a couple of different ways: 1) they can have a blocking effect on the cell receptors so the thyroid hormone has a tough time doing its job inside of the cells, 2) there is also some evidence that these toxins can actually damage the thyroid gland. This damage makes the thyroid less effective and more prone to disease and under activity.

One of the easiest things that almost everyone can do to enhance detoxification is to drink more water and take high doses of vitamin C which will help in flushing some toxins. Determining how much Vitamin C is needed is very individual. Start low at 1000 gr and increase every week by another 1000 grs.

There are some recommendations that you take high doses all at once and every 4-5 hrs apart. I am of the view that too much detoxification all at once with low adrenals, which is always the case with low thyroid and candida, can fire back.

This level of body heat, as you have described it, along with a scalloped tongue could point towards candida. Low sugar diet will starve them. Try to eliminate all grains as well such as wheat, rye, oat. If candida's presence is advanced you may notice a white coating or spotting on your tongue.

Nutritional deficiencies mainly iron and B12

Do you have any recent tests of your thyroid levels if available with their ranges? otherwise, you need to test the usual full profile of TSH, FT4, FT3, and the two thyroid antibodies: thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb), thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb)

The same for B12, Folate, Ferritin, and Vitamin D.

and CRP levels? inflammation markers

Good idea!

Often what appears to be normal for the doctors or within the range does not necessarily mean optimal or the levels that make you feel better.
