Bumps on the tongue

When starting up on Liothyronine (T3) I got bumps on the root of the tongue. They bother me a lot and get worse with stress. My doctor says it is autoimmune condition and nothing to do. Anyone familiar with this problem?

Canis2017,

Take an antihistamine tablet an hour before you take Liothyronine. If the bumps resolve it is likely that you have an allergy to one of the fillers in Liothyronine and should try another brand.

Thanks a lot for answering Clutter! I will try that! Any special fillers that could cause the problem/one should be aware of?

Thought maybe since I'm also taking hydrocortisone that would resolve the problems, but now I've had the bumps for over one year. But they are less painful in the morning- when it's a long time since my last dose of Lio, getting worse in the afternoon/evening, so you could be right.

Canis2017,

It could be any of the fillers in Liothyronine causing allergy. Do you take T3 only?

Yes, tried NDT Erfa first, but got huge problems with RT3 (was low on both ferritin and cortisol). Ferrtin is now OK and are taking 25 mg HC.

Clutter are you also on T3 only? Would appreciate advise from people in the same situation.

Canis2017,

No, I'm on T4+T3.

If the antihistamine helps then it is likely you have an allergy to the Liothyronine and should try a different make.

OK will try with the antihistamine- thanks!

Try doing what Clutter suggested. If that won't work it's possible T3 just uncovered one of underlying vitamin deficiencies.

Have you tested your vitamin D, B12, folate and ferritin levels?

Thanks a lot for answering! Yes, used to be low on all of them accept Folate, but have used a year to resolve that. Taking supplements daily now to keep the levels up.

Have you tested them recently? They still might be low despite supplements.

In times when bumps/sores are really painful try minimising acidic and spicy foods to avoid further irritation or you could try using a teething gel. It helps a lot!

Tested a month ago? Thanks for good advice- what is a teething gel?

Teething, gum or dental gel. All of them have small amounts of topical anesthetic and are used e.g. for teething babies or when you have mouth ulcers
