I am suffering with a very sore swollen tongue and I'm sure ages ago there was a post about this but I can't find it. Am I right in thinking that B12 may be the issue or increase in meds to rectify this? I am currently on Erfa one and quarter grains 6am and half grain 3pm and alternate days one and half grains 6am and half grain 3pm. I have been able to swim 3 times a week lately and energy levels and thyroid results good. I wonder if I should increase meds due to increased physical activity. Hope someone who has experience of scalloped sore tongue can help me out.

Swollen tongue and teeth impressions on tongue
hello, the scalloped tongue is a classic under replacement symptom, I had it too.
You don’t give your actual blood test results, if you post them on a reply others will comment. Normal isn’t always normal as you probably already know.

Ive had this when under medicated thyroid wise or low in B12, iron and folate. Do share results, as Regenallotment has suggested, as although good, these might not be optimal.
Also, in the past, when stressed, I clench my jaw in my sleep and this has caused tongue swelling and gum issues. Taking magnesium early evening helps me to relax; and this certainly helps me.
I have a sore and scalloped tongue but I’m overactive and take the nasty Carbimazole, B12, D3, magnesium, l-carnitine etc daily … assumed this is who I am now but can it mean more deficiencies?? 😭
I am currently on Erfa one and quarter grains 6am and half grain 3pm and alternate days one and half grains 6am and half grain 3pm.
You cannot do alternate dosing with T3. It just doesn't work. You need to be on a steay dose, the same every day.
Likely a post you seen from me. Sorry unable to give any advice as mine still same even though I'm trying to increase my t3 dose. I do plan on seeing if gp will rule out b12 deficiency as I'm having serious issues with memory.
I had this for years. My tongue could become very sore sometimes & was always scalloped. I discovered that tap water made it worse. I experimented by drinking only bottled water which improved my symptoms. Then I tried boiled cooled water & that was also ok.
The water companies put many chemicals into our tap water. I now live in a rural house with its own spring water. No chlorine.
Be careful with toothpaste too.
Might be worth a try.
many thanks for all your replies - latest results from December 2023 are:- B12 472 ng/L (range 197-771) T3 4.8pmol/L (range 3.1-6.8) VitD 122.2 nmol/L . Have been gargling with salt water and it's improved greatly- will up my dose to one and half grain Erfa 6am and half grain 3pm - did it before and got racing heart thus doc advice to alternate days - try it and see with hypo I believe!
I would try a week on bottled water. It might help a lot. Maybe thyroid problems increase the chances of a sensitive tongue like gluten is bad for hypo’s digestion
