Hi is there any constipation or teeth or gum problems. Have you seen GP with this?

Hi mary-intussuception,my gums have receeded quite a bit,not really constipated.Yes i,ve been to docs and she asked if im a smoker, did,nt even look at my tonque so as far as she was concernedits because i smoke, also i mentioned that my skin had become really itchy, her answer to that was to use moistriser.!!!Dont know why i bother sometimes.!!

Sylus911,

It may be better to see your dentist about it.

Is it white? If so, could be oral thrush/candida.

Your Gp can prescribe antifungal medication for this.

In the meantime, anything sugary will encourage it to flourish, so avoid sugary things as much as you can. Defintely don't eat sweets, chocolate, jam etc and no sugary drinks.

Could be linked to gut issues 😊 In years gone by Docs asked you to poke out your tongue for inspection - so am assuming it was important.

Google it and you could find some answers. In Ayeurvedic medicine a tongue scaper is routine !

These days the only thing most docs inspect is their computer screen for drug prices! ;)

sylus_911 , it's a simple thing but, when you brush your teeth make sure you brush your tongue too. You can get debris/plaque on your tongue as well as your teeth.

Sewnsew, i do actually do brush my tonque, thanks anyway.

For self-management of the problem - not a cure - try a Tung Brush and Tung Gel. Read the reviews on Amazon.

This was first recommended to me by a dental hygienist, and I think they are brilliant.

The brush has very short bristles and is hard compared to a toothbrush. Don't scrub, you'll make your tongue bleed. Always start at the back of the tongue and brush to the tip, don't go backwards and forwards.

Thanks for the info.

If you Google coated tongue and click on

Coated or white tongue NHS choices

It reads: 'You should see your GP for advice if ....... Your coated tongue persists for longer than two weeks '

There is a lot of information. It could be Leukoplakia, Oral lichen planus or Oral thrush among other conditions.

If it's oral thrush then your GP could have given you prescription for drops.

Hi again I've remembered the name of the drops.

Nystatin

They cured my Mum"s oral thrush. Unfortunately you can only get them on prescription.

Even if your GP thinks it is Leukoplakia she has a duty to care for you proffessionally and monitor you. If it doesn't respond to treatment for thrush and you see your dentist regularly perhaps he could monitor the condition, whatever the diagnosis is.x

Don't quote me but I think a sore white tongue can be a symptom of low B12. I have read so many articles about Hashi and low blood levels that I cannot remember where I read about the tongue problem. The article I read showed a picture of a tongue with white patches like a map of the moon. I have that sometimes and it was interesting because I do have low B12.

I have actually had my b12 tested that was ok.thanks anyway.

I've just had the same as you and it sounds like oral thrush. It can be caused and made worse by using a mouthwash. Are you ears itchy too? I've started on a probio as I've read it's caused by Candida which lives on the sugar and refined carbs the we eat. I began on the Keto diet at the end of March. I think it's all linked to the flora in your stomach/gut.

Would indicate something is not right - and esp in chinese medicine. Could be to do with what you are eating. l have used a tongue scraper for decades, either bought or wrong side of plastic knife. Others will tell you more
