High FT3

Hello all,

I've just been back to the drs for a repeat blood test and the last one came back 'abnormal'.

I asked the nurse for a little more detail; she showed me the screen which just said 'Thyroid test. Range 3-5. Result 8.37'

Could anyone maybe shed a little more light on that for me please? I appreciate it's very little to go on! From my research online I'd hazard a guess that it was the FT3 result?

Thank you so much.

Judging by the numbers it looks like a FT3 test, but there must be a better way of confirming that. Could you ask for a print off of the tests you had done so you can see them all? Being told tests are 'normal' is not always helpful if you are feeling unwell. You need to see what your TSH and FT4 results are as well. If you do indeed have a high FT3 then either you are taking too much thyroid hormone and need to reduce the dose, or you are producing too much thyroid hormone and are hyperthyroid.

Thank you for your reply!

I should get the results from this test by the end of the week so I'm holding off asking for more information from the drs until then - don't want to be a bother!

I just know it will play on my mind and without any contract it's difficult to process.

Is this second test - done 4 weeks after the first - likely to show a 'normal' result?

Again, Geworgie, it's impossible to say whether this second test will be normal. It sounds as though they are repeating it to see if it is high again and then make a decision as to what to do.

As Scazzoh says, it's guesswork - it might even be TSH and maybe the range was .3-5 but the . didn't show up (particularly if they didn't write it as 0.3-5.0)? Guesswork :)

Some usual reference ranges here (tho' they will very from one lab to another): thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

I hadn't thought of that one! In which case Gewordie has a TSH over range and should be offered treatment. Once we get the results and the ranges it should become clearer.

Thank you both, very grateful for your replies. I do appreciate I gave you very little to work with!

I'm so hoping the next test will duplicate the results as I'm desperate for a reason for my exhaustion.

I'll update when I get the results.

Thank you again. :)
