Help doctor can't prescribe Armour thyroid anymore.

Hi All

I am new here and need your help.

Just been online to order my repeat Armour thyroid, and it has been removed from my repeats list. I have just been to the surgery and they have given me this letter please see attachment.

I have been on Armour prescribed on the NHS for about 8 years and have felt really well my life was not worth living on Thyroxine.

Does anybody have any ideas where to go from here, it does not look if l am going to be able to get a private prescription from him either, so it looks as if l have to go it alone.

Please can anybody advise me which NDT from somewhere not needing a prescription is the nearest to Armour thyroid or does anybody have any other ideas where l go from here.

I would make an appointment to talk to your local MP. It has been decided to remove T3 as well (NDT was stopped being prescribed a while ago now - due to False Statements being made about it by the British Thyroid Association.

T3 is supposed not to be withdrawn if the patient has a Clinical Need so if you go to the pinned post and click on Help us Fight this injustice you can read further info. and I think NDT would be interconnected.

You have the option of purchasing your own NDT privately (no information is posted on the open forum) but why should you pay if in the UK and some people cannot afford too especially if retired or have a low income.

Your MP may be helpful especially as you have been well on Armour for eight years. I think that should be investigated and it should not be because of cost-cutting as people will suffer and need more prescriptions for their disabling symptoms. Your MP could also contact Lyn Mynott at TUK and I am sure she will explain precisely what is going on at present with the NHS.

The following is a Rebuttal which was published and sent to the BTA and RCoP about NDT. Dr Lowe was also an Adviser to Thyroiduk.org.uk and despite three yearly reminders before his death, they never did respond.

Tell your MP that NDT is the very original thyroid hormone replacement, and safely used since 1892 up until the late 50's/60's and Big Pharma who wants a piece of the pie with regard to the millions of T4 prescriptions plus the blood tests (we didn't have blood tests before levothyroxine) and it was all done by doctors who knew all the clinical symptoms of hypo and prescribed NDT until patient was well.

It is against the rules of this forum to post any information of where or how to source prescription medications. I have amended your post. You can, if you wish, send a private message to a member.

Abbots,

I'm sorry your GP and CCG have taken that attitude and stopped your prescription. Armour is listed in the US national formulary so the safety and quality is assured even though it is not licensed in the British national formulary.

Email louise.roberts@thyroiduk.org for a list of member recommended private doctors but do check they will prescribe Armour or other brands before confirming an appointment as not all will.

Armour is available without prescription but is the most expensive NDT brand. The only way to tell whether cheaper brands are effective for you is to try them.

If members can recommend anyone they will send you a private message. To read a private message: support.healthunlocked.com/...

Thank you shaws and Clutter for your replys they are much appreciated.

I can certainly go and see my MP, but does he have any say in if they should supply me Armour and if so will they take any notice if him.

I really need to order some NDT even if l don't have to use it as l really don't want to be left without any at all, l am happy to order from Thailand if l can find out where from, and which one is the nearest to Armour. Please can you PM me with a brand and where l can buy it.

Thanks

Abbots,

Your MP can raise the issue with the Secretary of State and Health Minister but who knows whether any notice will be taken. Many of us are having similar issues with NHS England wanting to withdraw Liothyronine and switch us to Levothyroxine.

Thanks clutter

I think l will order some NDT from Thailand as it seems to be the country that will be reliable to send it long term.

Now to decide which one and where to buy if any idea which NDT and supplier would be a good starting point.

I know you cannot post suppliers or recommendations of tablets but a PM would be much appreciated.

Abbots,

I sent you a PM about an hour ago. Click on the email notification you will have been sent or on the red dot above your username and select messages. I can't advise which Thai NDT you should take but I have observed that if Thyroid-S doesn't work for someone switching to Thiroyd often does and vice verse.

I find this letter quite troubling. I switched from Nutri Thyroid to NDT but with established osteoporosis I am now worried I could be increasing my fracture risk. Is it true that T3 increases the risk?

Sorry for jumping into your post, but I wanted to refer to the letter you shared x

There is no published evidence that T3 (as medication) increases fracture risk that I have ever seen. High T3 (as in Graves disease) can increase risk of osteoporosis. T3 levels (I think, but check) influence bone turnover rates - so building of new bone as well as destruction of old. One study says "prolonged treatment with thyroxine (T4) or triiodothyronine (T3) can directly increase bone resorption in cultured fetal rat long bones " so no difference between T4 and t3 there (and they say "We conclude that T4 and T3 can directly stimulate bone resorption in vitro at concentrations approaching those which occur in thyrotoxicosis.", so they were looking at overmedication). Skeletal development depends on T3.

Being hyper thyroid I understand increases the risk! I think Diogenes wrote about this a while back on tests done but I think the incease of one in T lease a 1000 would t be considered significant. Search for his posts. I'm just dashing out so can't do it for you.
