Rmichelle,

What are you shocked about and which tests didn't your GP understand?

Most GPs don't have a broad knowledge of thyroid dysfunction but probably understand hypothyroidism better than hyperthyroidism because hyperthyroidism is usually managed in endocrinology.

Gp did not know anything about the thyroid whatsoever, did not know what tests were what and asked me to explain what tests should be done, i think gps should have some knowledge of this. Did not know anything about thyroid probs. It,s just doesnt inspire confidence.

GP = general practitioner. They only know about common diseases they see every day and even then they frequently know little about them.

Also like specialists, GPs tend to specialise in certain disease areas. If you read that GP's profile on their website it may say for example they specialise or are interested children's medicine. However even then if you turn as a teenager with a tumour you may have to turn up 4 to 9 times to be referred on due to multiple factors including the fact tumours in children are rare.

No GP whose profile I've looked at say they specialise in thyroid disorders.

You are actually lucky to have a GP who admits they know SFA then some of the ones I've had the "pleasure" of being treated by who dismiss me because they don't understand the results in front of them.

As Clutter has said GPs don't usually treat hyperthyroidism as patients are referred to Endos. I had Graves on and off for 30 years and always managed by the hospital, GPs never involved.

I suppose it's good sign that he wanted to ask and understand but you are right, does t inspire convidence!

At least he was honest and admitted to not knowing. Most would be too defensive, vain and ignorant to admit they didn't know. Well done
