Is it okay to not take your thyroxine at the same time every day?

Hi there, I was diagnosed with Hypothroidism at 17 years old, I'm 21 now. I try my best to take my levothyroxine 75mg every morning at the same time. However, I also do struggle. Is it okay to take it not always exactly at the same time every day?!

The important thing is not the time but you need to take levothyroxine on an empty stomach with a whole glass of water and then not eat or drink anything for an hour afterwards (water ok) for best absorption.

I do that anyway, so this is making me feel a lot better about it all! :-)

alicemay,

Yes as long as you remember to take it sometime ..... and as Nanaedake states always on an empty stomach. Thyroxine has a long half life which means it takes a while to get into your system and a while to leave.

thanks for the reply! I always take it on an empty stomach! so it is okay for it to be not taken at the same time every day? many like a couple of hours different!?

alicemay,

Yes. There are reports of people taking their Levo once a week ! ! ... although I would not advocate this as many are so ill on this forum and a small regular dose of thyroid hormone replacement must be more sympathetic to flailing adrenal glands than a huge weekly dose.

A difference of a couple of hours would be fine.

Just make sure you have not eaten or drunk (except for water) for ar least 2 hours before you take it and then leave an hour before eating or drinking after you've taken it. Timing doesn't matter.

The half-life of levo is so long (about a week), that the time at which you take it isn't relevant.
