My anti TPO is now 5707.2 and my ATAB is 1072. I know the antibodies is attacking my thyroid . I am not on any medication from any conventional endocrinologist, but am seeing a homeopathist who is prescribing me some antidotes to take since i am removing all the amalgam fillings (12 teeth) n also 3 root canals. My blood tests were taken BEFORE my homeopathist visit. Am i doing the right thing to have all my amalgam fillings and root canal removed? Thank you. I am from Malaysia

I didn't have mine removed and I am now well. Sometimes we have to adjust doses or thyroid hormones until we find a dose which suits. This is an excerpt:-

However, for a number of patients, no objective signs of adverse reactions to amalgam fillings, or other diseases explaining their complaints, can be observed (22). Patients who attribute subjective health complaints to dental amalgam describe a number of health complaints including tiredness, headaches, pain from muscles and joints, and problems with memory and concentration (18, 22). There is a lack of treatment options for patients without objective signs of adverse reactions to amalgam fillings, and removal of sound amalgam fillings is generally not recommended. Some patients nevertheless decide to remove all amalgam fillings at their own initiative (23), and studies have reported significant improvements in subjective health complaints after the removal of amalgam fillings (24, 25).

Pauline,

I would not remove any fillings or root canals, you will only end up with more problems. You may get infections or need antibiotics which will just add to your autoimmune condition.

Do you have blood test results for TSH, fT3, fT4? If you are hypothyroid homeopathy will do nothing for you, you have to replace missing hormone. Your TPO is very high, this is usually associated with hypothyroidism.

If you are hypo it can affect your mood, ability to think and judgement. I would get your thyroid checked by a doctor and treated if your levels are low. Once you have recovered you will then be in a better positiion to decide how you want to go forward.

Remember people with no teeth can also be hypothyroid!

Still got all my amalgum and root canals and I'm fine.

What are your thyroid blood tests showing? You need the correct thyroid medication to resolve your symptoms.

Has any medic explained ever explained that your high antibodies means autoimmune thyroid disease also called Hashimoto's

Hashimoto's very often causes low stomach acid (especially if not medicated)

Low stomach acid means we can't dissolve food to get the vitamins and then with low vitamins we can not use thyroid hormones. A vicious circle

GP might think digestive system is "nothing to do with thyroid" so they don't consider it, But it's probable that the Hashimoto's started in the gut.

Until we fix the gut, things don't improve. Very common to need to be on strictly gluten free diet. A small percentage with Hashimoto's are coeliac (approx 5%) but about 80% find gluten free diet reduces symptoms and may slowly lower antibodies

But important to get vitamins up by supplementing if too low

But you will still most likely need thyroxine to replace thyroid hormones your own thyroid is not making

Get your vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested as well as thyroid tests for TSH, FT3 and FT4

Do thyroid tests as early as possible in morning and fasting

What slow dragon has said about gluten and following the advice from the link included, is far more essential than removing your fillings.

I do aggree that they may not be helping, but you should try the low risk options first. Get your body stronger with changing your diet. Then after a few months of being on the new diet, you'll be stronger to resist the effects of the anesthesia and reduce the potential need for antibiotics.

Also take a really strong antibiotic such as vsl3.co.uk

Take these for at least 10 days before you start your treatment and throughout. This will help build a good resistance to the toxins and bugs that will come from the removal.

Good luck with what ever you decide to do. I have managed to massively reduce my symptoms and my TSH, T4 and antibodies have all fallen back to subclinical levels within 4 months of following the advice from the Isabella Wentz link included above (I also still have 4 amalgam fillings)

It is a lot of hard work and at first, I didn't think I could find the energy to do it. But with acupuncture to help calm/focus my mind and provide energy boosts coupled with knowing and understanding my reason why. I feel I have found my way through.

The best thing anyone can do is to know why you are doing this. Why do you want to feel better? (Just wanting to is not enough)

For me, I have just qualified as an Acupuncturist, so I am a health care professional, I have trained 6 years to get this far and I don't want people to think my knowledge is flawed because I am unable to keep myself healthy.

Find and you WHY find your WAY!

Following on from SlowDragon I fully agree with what she suggests.

It is your high thyroid antibodies which attack your gland and yours are very high. Going Gluten Free can help reduce them. You will eventually become hypothyroid.

Has the doctor checked your thyroid hormones, TSH, T4 T3, Free T4, Free T3? If so, please post the results with the ranges.

Have you been diagnosed as hypothyroid. Even if not, if antibodies are present you should be given levothyroxine.

He was President of the British Thyroid Association and in this article he quotes that if antibodies are present we should be given levothyroxine to 'nip things in the bud'. Highlight and discuss with GP.

Blood tests for thyroid hormones have to be at the very earliest, fasting (you can drink water) and if you were taking thyroid hormone replacement you'd allow a gap of 24 hours between the last dose and test and take afterwards.

Ask GP to also test B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate. Deficiencies can cause symptoms.

I have read that disturbing amalgam fillings can make matters worse. I replace mine with composite fillings as and when they need done but leave well alone otherwise.

OMG! I almost fell over reading your antibody reads. Im in the US its 3a when I receive my notification ( yes, I am awake , I stay up due to BF work schedule) anyway, I want to hug you!! You are so sweet to even think of amalgam removal , BUT PLEASE NOT NOW, just as Sandrafrog stated I would NEVER even consider dental work without antibiotics first but right now you are in the middle of a vicious attack to your thyroid. focus on eating even healthier -build yourself up in health!

Start by drinking water with lemon,

drink bone broth-- helps repair gut lining

,eat leafy vegetables & lightly steamed cruciferous vegetables ( broccoli, kale, cauliflower etc)

eat vitamin C rich foods & supplement. VitC ( helps many body functions)

VERY IMPORTANT , swish & SPIT OUT unrefined virgin coconut oil ( its found solid if weather not hot)

Coconut oil is antibacterial antiviral & antifungal. It was ( is ) used throughout history for dental care.

Selenium 200mcg helps lower antibodies but I prefer you tested before you use it long term.

PS no gluten like slow dragon stated and often thyroid people have sensitivity to dairy ( its the casein protein in it) BOTH have similar molecular to thyroid & part why the body keeps attacking thyroid when u eat these things so just RESTRICT .

I avoid cruciferous veggies unless well cooked as they are goitrogenic. Someone will weigh in if I'm wrong about this. I do eat them as veggies & in soups. Cauliflower and almond is a particular favourite of mine.

Hi Pauline other info on B12 and other B complexes may help you. Biotin N is recommended as well as Global healing vegenasafe, but we have customs charges which are dear in UK.

soy, and lectins retard your thyroid and other chemicals in the environment such as disinfectants

and chlorine, fluoride in water and toothpaste might affect you. Many people in UK are not satisfied with levothryoxin prescribed as some GPs only prescribe T4. T3 is essential for many

people. Many are buying NDTs with private prescriptions from their doctors. Thyroiduk. org better

health has a page with a list of pharmacies who will send you the NDT if you fax or e mail them.

a private prescription which must detail how much in milligrams your NDT in your prescription.

There is a table with each of the NDT reputable firms with the contents of their product

eg Erfa and Natures thyroid - pharmacy Chemist -4-U

Natural Dessicated Thyroid suppliers Uk will bring up lists. Dr Gundry s berry diet has helped my metabolism with fruit such as blackcurrants, blackberries blue berries, damson plums, which I take with natural yoghurt which has B12. I have not been on any levothyroxine but take iodine in food

such as natural yoghurt ,milk fish paste fresh white fish shell fish and prawns. I take my vitamin

B12 and other essential b vitamins in marmite, which can go in stews. I also take B12 drops.

Other sources of B12 are in broccoli, and dark leafy vegetables fortified cereals.

They say not to take B6 on its own but with B12. Chris.Kresser is interesting with audio and

written info. I have removed tannin in coffee tea beer and red wine, as in tea and coffeet he leaves and beans are roasted and are carbons, a bit like smoked food which should also be removed with smoking and alcohol. The most important other factor is the gluten free diet with no barley, wheat or rye. Oats may be alright but sometimes have traces of gluten in manufacture.

Other foods with oxelates such as rhubarb and spinach might harm the thyroid, but I love these so eat rhubarb with yoghurt, and have spinach in a white sauce with milk.
