Wondering if anyone has any links or info regards teeth, gum, nasal and ear pain due to thyroid issues?
Already had two teeth taken out on one side due to pain and the pain is still bad in the gum going in to the ear and nose
It is getting worse on the other side and older fillings are starting to throb and become painful elsewhere
That's twice my dentist has talked me out from getting all of them all out so asked to be referred for a panoramic x-ray as he's at a loss to what's wrong
Seems to be if I have treatment it never gets better just worse as I seem not to be tolerating fillings or root canal treatment the last few years
Be really grateful if anyone has any suggestions of possible causes
Still not properly medicated with T3/T4 but my 6 weeks wait is up this Monday to see where I stand

I read the above and was wandering if you are grinding your teeth at night? This can cause your teeth to break/crack, cause a lot of pain and also give you constant headaches. If this is not the case, then someone else would be better to guide you as I am not sure but I would get another opinion from another dentist or Dr. (medical Dr.) who may have a different perspective.
Hello! This sounds a lot like trigeminal neuralgia. I would advise to speak to your doctor. The treatment is normally carbemazepine & it is near-instant relief.
Have a Google of trigeminal neuralgia and see what you think.
Hi. Do you suffer with acid reflux as that can cause ear/sinus problems. Sometimes its hard to know if its ears or teeth causing problems. Having an uneven bite can cause problems too when you have teeth taken out perhaps more on one side than another. Get a referral to a dental hospital, they helped my daughter tremendously.
Sounds classic trigeminal neuralgia. My dentist was useless (as was GP) - took out a perfectly good tooth - costing me £2000 for replacement. My TN is now managed well.
In the first instance, I recommend you contact the Trigeminal Neuralgia Association (TNA). Helpline 01883 370 214; ph 01883 371 595. Email help@tna.org.uk; admin@tna.org.uk
The only true expert, I think, is Professor Joanne Zakrzewska at the Eastman Dental Hospital. Unfortunately she is only NHS so it takes months to get an appointment. A form must be filled in my your GP (or maybe by dentist) and submitted first, then an appointment will be offered.
Good luck with getting good treatment very soon. The TNA will be able to help.
Your story is all too common - a friend of a friend lost many teeth (ignorant dentist) and her job (in pain so often) before it was diagnosed.
That does sound like TN. Mine started after a whiplash injury and is kept under control by a cranial osteopath so I am drug free. I would wake up with my ear in agony. I suffered pain in my teeth with no problem found by the dentist and pain behind my eyes with nothing found my the optometrist. I had migraine type pain through one side of my face and eye and that side of my face used to drop. All because of a bulging disc in my neck . If you look on cranial.co.uk you can search for a practitioner near you. Hope you find some answers.
Sorry you're dealing with pain and other symtoms, jacobite33.
I have a sore neck and at times can't hold my head up
It's very painful around the c5/c6 area
and you're experiencing numbness. It really sounds like you need an MRI and assessment by a spine specialist. The tools physios use for neural assessment are more limited.
Well Antibodie I was hoping that was the case and hoped it would resolve after starting T3upNot the case for far but I don't think I'm properly medicated yet as jumped in and had to rethink and restart my dosages
I had something similar - had a tooth taken out unnecessarily I think. I saw a facial specialist at a Spire hospital near me as I had googled myself into all sorts of concerns. He told me it was facial arthromyalgia (TMJ disorder) & I should apply heat & the pain would go. He had seen people who have had all sorts of dental work done as this can present as a toothache/jawache. I microwave one of those lavendar bags & apply to my face - over time (a couple of weeks) it worked. Pain gone.
When I had facial pain (never actually diagnosed as trigeminal neuralgia), I was given tramadol - which helped a bit. But they probably won't now do that.
But what I think set me on a path to recovery was taking vitamin B12. I'd take 1000 micrograms B12 and suck/swallow them - sometimes several times a day. (They were ordinary methylcobalamin supplements. Nothing special.)
After months, I found the pain had reduced very significantly, and I started to only take occasional B12. Though every time I felt anything in the area, I'd take some more. Just as we might take paracetamol
Am quite convinced that my B12 level cannot have been extremely low before, so it is not at all clear why taking lots of it helped. Or seemed to.
I eventually had to take the offer for tramadol yesterday from the docs as that's over two years now and getting worse, the paracetamol wasn't doing much either now
Good thing there too,is they have given me a week's supply of zoplicon and I actually had about four hours sleep last night, that's fantastic for me!
But there not the answer long term
I'm not taking B12 (have a new droplet bottle ready just incase) so my blood test next week will inform me more on that note
Well to be truthful you fine bunch will tell me when I post my results for advice
I honestly think everyone on here that gives up there time to offer support and advice are wonderful!!! I
It may be trigeminal neuralgia - it's still pretty undiagnosed, I went 22 years without diagnosis in a similar situation. I had all kinds of unnecessary treatment trying to get rid of the pain (if it is this standard painkillers don't work, I tried!). There are two types, one where you get electric shock type bolts through the face and one where it's a constant with the kind of pain you describe. Unfortunately I have both. They are starting to think there maybe a link between thyroid and trigeminal neuralgia
Interesting about a thyroid connection. I have heard it associated with B12D/PA, Sjogren's and Lupus and gluten intolerance/Coeliac. Sorry you've had it for so long. Best wishes
Thank you for posting this. I had terrible pain a few weeks ago. I don’t get tooth trouble. The last time I had an issue was about 20 years ago.I went to the dentist and they said it wasn’t an infection. I ended up having the nerve taken out of one tooth (I only have 2 fillings) and a temporary filling.
That was on the bottom left. But my top left gum was pulsing and felt spongy. Then, overnight it all stopped.
The top gum is a bit iffy, but I’m not going to ask for anything from the dentist as I don’t think there’s a problem.
As for the temporary filling - I’ve been told I need to have that done properly which will involve removing the very old filling and end up with a crown. (Feel sick at the thought). The last time I had a crown it didn’t work, got infected, couldn’t take the antibiotics due to migraine and had tooth removed.
The top gum is where I have some receding gums, have had for about 30 years. The pain (from cold water etc) has been almost unbearable for around 6 months on and off. It’s suddenly disappeared.
I’m now wondering about this TN as suggested above.
So once again, thanks for the post and thank you all for replies to give so many helpful suggestions. 🧁
Lovecake no needed to thank meThank all these fine moderators and others, that give up there time to help and advise everyone thats at a loss with there problems and issues
I can honestly say from the heart, that this site and the people have given me the hope and strength that's helped me get by when things have been at its bleakest!
I have had very very similar symptoms and it is how my severe symptoms started around 2 years ago. I have Hashi and I am hypothyroid, been left undiagnosed for a long time. My jaw pain symptoms improved with the thyroxine and an iron infusion( I was severely iron deficient ferritin of 10) along with all vitamins recommended on here (I am very very thankfull to the knowledge of people on here) but I still have a lot of symptoms to do with mouth, jaw, ears amongst others I know my thyroxine needs increasing but can't get GP to increase. In my experience the jaw mouth and ear symptoms are definately to do with my thyroid. I originally thought it was my wisdom teeth causing jaw gum mouth and ear problems seen an MFU + ENT consultants told it had nothing to do with them and nothing wrong with ears. It has been mentioned to me about fibromyalgia, burning mouth syndrome and trigeminal neuralgia. I am 100% convinced it is all down to my thyroid.
I have earache in right ear almost all the time and ear infections only on right side. I’ve noticed a loud cracking sound in my jaw as well when yawning. Yesterday the cracking sound went to the left side as well, my R ear feels full I know it’s not wax as I had my ears syringed last month at specsave (painful experience for me) I had X-ray at dentist in December and she didn’t say anything was wrong with my jaw bone but I may go back and see my dentist as it appears to be getting worse. I don’t have answers and I’m not suffering as bad as you but wanted to share that I also am having ear problems as well and I’m hashi with cfs fibro. I hope you feel better soon and you find out what’s causing all this. Best wishes x
I believe that, your Dentist, is Talking about a 'Maxilofacial Surgen'- which is a person, who will 'look' at youe Entire Skull- and the Bone/ Tendrons/ Tissue within. Far more that 'just' a Dentist this, really is, the Gold Standard of Dental Care. Consider yourself, extreemly Fortunate, to be seeing one- especially At The Moment.
Trust me, when I tell you, that 'If Anyone Can Find The Cause, of your Pain & Discomfort, (s)he can. I had friend, a girl that I'd know for many years, who, even as a child, experienced 'Dreadful Pain(s) In Her Mouth'. The MS found that a 'Stray' piece of bone, was Pushing on one of her Major Jaw Nerves. He sucessfully Operated and, bar a little 'healing', No More Discomfort. So DO, if you 'get the chance', accept this Referal it, just might, be your Salvation!
Hi thereI too have same. Started 5 years ago suddenly noticed when I opened my mouth I had this grating sound like the sound you would hear if you rubbed 2 pebbles together. I also developed tinnitus at the same time which unfortunately has never gone and drives me crazy. Last year out of nowhere suddenly would get a pain in all of my teeth. I mentioned it to my dentist who said teeth were fine. But said I had signs of bruxism and encouraged me to part with over £100 for a mouth guard which I couldn’t use. The pain is excruciating and lasts only a short while. I can’t seem to find what triggers it. I self diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia and TMJ. I tried osteopath but didn’t really help. Going to look into cranial osteopath from comments on here. Also acupuncture for the tinnitus. Better start saving my pennies at this rate. Good luck hope you find some relief let us know
I will summerlove!I have tinnitus in both ears,I've eventually accepted it and sometimes find it soothing at night strangely
Don't get me wrong I was at the end of my tether at one point when I eventually developed it in my right ear too,but that had a lot to do with anxiety and my thyroid
I felt it originated from my neck as I've had issues there and waiting on a cervical support to help ease the strain
Always tension and pain there trying to hold my head up,so might help ease the tinnitus too
It seems quite discreet and not bulky but will find out exactly how it is when it arrives
I had a procedure done called (not endorsing this to anyone) Atlasprofilax just before the lockdown and I swear by it
The difference it made was fantastic but I jerked my neck swimming g and it went back to square one and lockdown then started
Once I get the collar and if it does what it's says on the ad I will be going back for another session and hopefully retrain my posture and walk
For the price of one session it was far better, cheaper and more beneficial than seeing a chiropractor about 10 times and an osteopath twice
If your looking at a cranial osteopath have an open but cautious look there too
