HI everyone, I know we all appreciate how hard it is dealing with thyroid disease and that a lot of us struggle with weight gain. In the 3 years since my thyroid failed I have put on 3.5 stone despite eating reasonably well and exercising. However just recently (12th July) I have discovered that I have acid damage to my oesophagus and have had to go on a strict diet along with medication to try and heal the damage.
On this diet I have lost 1st 2lb in 25 days. Putting aside the distress of the acid problem, the weight loss and significant improvement in energy and stamina has been quite brilliant and I thought I would share with everyone as it is so difficult to lose weight when hypo.
I bought a book called the acid watchers diet and along with a few lifestyle changes and advice from my consultant, i have changed my way of eating.
The consultant advised : No Tea, Coffee, Pop, chocolate, Alcohol, Mint, fat,Tomatoes, onion, prepared food or garlic - 5 small meals a day, don't eat after 6.30pm and don't eat 3 hours before exercise
So examples of what I have been eating
Breakfast (7am) - slice cooked turkey with organic P.Butter and cucumber or scrambled egg & smoked salmon or oats made with water/almond milk and some blue berries
10am: melon with cucumber
12:30: avocado / tinned salmon / cucumber
3pm: grated carrrot with a few raisins and chopped nuts.
6pm: veg and piece of fish or chicken
all small portions
and I have just drank water (even during a week abroad celebrating our 25th wedding and our daughters 18th )
I also walk and play tennis 3 times a week which has improved significantly due to better stamina.
One of the things I was really worried about was I struggle to keep awake at work in the afternoons (I work full time) and used to have to drink coffee so I was scared as to how I would cope without coffee. Its been quite unbelievable really. I guess the small portions and eating more often without anything sugary or processed, has stabledised blood sugars because I haven't had any bouts of wanting to fall asleep at my desk so far.
Its been hard, I have been through the angry, feeling sorry for myself stage (still do have moments) and the "Im too tired on an evening to prepare all those meals" to take to work the next day etc....BUT it has been quite a revelation! Instead df collapsing onto the settee at 8pm and wanting to go to bed, I have still had energy to do stuff which I never had before.
So I just wanted to share this with you incase it might help someone. I know its drastic but the food is all healthy stuff rather than shakes or those @'no carb" diets etc
