Irregular periods with Hyperthyroidism, on block and replace

Has anyone else found that their periods have been really messed up by hyperthyroidism and thyroid meds?

I am on the progesterone only pill and for about 8 years it was great for me - never had a period at all - then when my hyperthyroidism got really bad I started to have irregular periods which haven't settled down even with medication. They're not proper periods - very light in terms of flow, dark in terms of blood, lots of mini clots which is kind of disgusting, and usually the flow is quite on and off - like nothing for maybe most of a day then some bleeding then nothing for a few more hours then some spotting and clots etc. there's no logic to it! Sometimes they only last a day or two, sometimes longer.

My levels are now in range and they've just started me on the replace part of block and replace (the levo) but that seems to have messed me up even more as I started getting clot type bleeding pretty much immediately after taking the first dose and I'm now on day 7 of another light but strange period

The doctors keep saying it'll settle down - maybe I should be more patient and assume it'll settle properly when i've been stable on block and replace for a while - but it just seems endless!

Anyone had similar experiences? How did it turn out?

Thanks in advance : )

Hi ERSH!

I can only offer anecdotal advice in that when I was on block and replace and consistently very hypo, my periods were long, drawn out, painful and heavy. It took some months to settle down (since it is a hormonal thing). For me it took about 3 months to settle once my dose of levo was adjusted.

What I can say with certainty is that it can definitely affect your menstrual cycle!

Thanks for your reply! Good to know that a bit of a lag time for things to settle is normal! Reassures me that it will eventually! Been a long and difficult process getting my levels in range so I guess not surprising it's messed up my hormones !

I hoped you'd have more replies. I've noticed recently that my period has become quite light, but the last 2 have been just one day of light-ish bleeding, and with a cycle a few days longer than normal.

I hope this means I'm getting closer to my ideal dose, as I'm raising my dose every 6 weeks. But I'm also concerned it could be something bad. I'm seeing a private doctor at the moment who I think might read a lot into it.

It could mean that your dose is too high? I know that , typically (although my experience is pretty much the opposite) periods get lighter or go away when thyroid levels are too high, and heavier when they are too low.

It seems to be the pattern that they're getting lighter as my dose gets higher. But I think they've been light-ish my whole time of being very hypo. I've never had a time while I've been sick that they've been heavy.

To be honest I don't really remember what they were like before I was ill :p

I guess it's the kind of thing that nobody is going to be able to understand in full - I'm not sure it's possible to know what's going on further than thinking about it in terms of if my thyroid levels are changing then my hormones are going to be all over the place, so periods will be doing weird things (like when you first start when you're a teenager, when your hormones are also a bit erratic)

fingers crossed that when we're stable it'll settle down!

Hi, my periods were very light, 1-2 days max, when I was hyper, since I've been in range, my periods have been on and off. Went to my GP, who fobbed it off as the start of the menopause, as I'm 47. However, I'm not convinced. Just started block and replace so guess I'll find out soon if it's the big M or thyroid levels to blame! I'm so tired at the moment, I've had all my vitamins and minerals checked, they're all fine. Just wish I had some energy!
