Who on earth would voluntarily give these up FOR LIFE??
I gave up gluten, very reluctantly, and angrily, as an experiment I really didn't want to do. I love hot crumpets with loads of butter, jam doughnuts, and sponge puddings and custard.
Unfortunately for me (or fortunately, depending on how you want to view it), I got loads of benefits from going gluten-free, so I'm stuck with it unless I want to go back to the way I was.
Gluten doesn't just affect the gut it affects the brain in some people. I was one of those with an affected brain. My balance was very poor and my temper was sometimes almost homicidal. Those problems have gone or markedly improved. Depression is almost a thing of the past, and is a minor issue now. I also got some gut benefits too - I absorb iron a lot better than I did.
I was told after thorough testing some years ago that I don't have coeliac disease. I have also never had a positive test for thyroid antibodies. And yet I feel so much better being gluten-free.
I hate being lumped together with people giving up gluten as a lifestyle choice. Put it this way - my husband is better at checking for gluten than I am, because he suffers with my horrendous temper if I eat it.
Exactly, well said! I almost feel guilty for admitting I'm gluten free & even tho now I have a proper excuse ( hashimotos) I can see people's eyes glaze over cos
they've never heard of it & I think they believe I'm making it up! Yeah right! You lot give up gluten! You wouldn't last a week!!!!
Omg!! I'd forgotten about crumpets! Stop making my mouth water for something I can't have!!! 😂
I also didn't realise just how serious this was, & how much stuff contains gluten. 1 of my saviours was chips (fish & chip shop chips) til I discovered they are cooked in same oil as battered cod! & I found small pieces of batter in chips & blooming vinegar has gluten in it! If only people realised how difficult it is! Even some lovely French pate had wheat flour in it as I discovered 1/2 way thru eating it!!
I agree, did you see my previous post where someone gave me gluten just to prove it was all in my mind!!?? The last 2 weeks days have been hell! No it's def worth giving up!
I've been given River Cottage gluten free by Naomi Devlin who works with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, I feel better just looking at it lol, the picture on the front is bread and butter and raspberry jam😂 The recipes are fabulous-can't wait to start, there is so much info on all the different types of flours you can use and how to do it, I'm not on commission honestly! 😋
Oh how I wish for those days back. I too love everything on your list but no longer am I able to eat them. After being diagnosed hashimotoes over 20 yrs ago I happily went about my life on levo without changing a thing. Not one problem occurred. Then a doc miss read my results , cut me down to 50 micg from 250 and my antibodies went heywire. Weight ballooned from size 8 to 10 to 16 /18. Developed thyroid eye disease and mental health issues leading to Total breakdown. This was 8 yrs ago and I have been fighting doctors ( not same one ) for help ever since. I have at last found a diet that works for me after many expensive disasters and so called healthy eating diet sheets failed,it's free. Don't be to condemning of others please as we never know what's around the corner. I hope you continue to be able to enjoy your life. 🙂
