I have had Lichens Planus in my mouth for many years. My dentist took a biopsy and had it analazied and explained it's similar to eczema and there is no treatment for it, I believe it's linked to auto immune disease. Has anyone experienced this problem?

I have Lichen Planus in my mouth and have done for a couple of years. In June of this year I was diagnosed with Lichen Planus on my right ankle and the dermatologist said it an auto-immune problem. I have a steroid cream for the ankle but no treatment for the mouth. I think the issue with the mouth began sometime after I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism about 3 year ago.

I was prescribed Betamethasone 500mcg Soluble Tablets for use with my persistent mouth ulcers. It is an unlicensed, off-label use. It was prescribed by the max-fax (maxillofacial) department at my local hospital.

You dissolve a single tablet in about 10ml of water. Then you use the solution as a mouth wash, then spit it out, NOT swallow it. I found it absolutely brilliant, but had problems getting hold of it because it was originally prescribed by a hospital consultant.

Although it isn't anywhere near as good, and is simply a short-term, topical pain-reliever, I have found this stuff helpful :

ultrachloraseptic.co.uk/

I buy it off the shelf in Tesco, and just spray it on the sore bits in my mouth. I don't actually use it or need it for a sore throat very often.

...

I suspect I have Lichen Planus in my mouth. As well as the ulcers I also have lots of white lines on the inside of my cheeks. But since I haven't been to the dentist for ages due to the frequent ulceration I have no diagnosis.

In Finland they just published a study about lichens planus and hypothyroidism. It's more common with hypothyroidism than non hypo. I am not sure if it is translated to English yet.

I started getting mouth ulcers and burning lips, I saw 4 different maxillofacial doctors and got a diagnosis of burning mouth syndrome which I am not happy with.

A quick search found this:

I wondered if Vit D was a factor as it is autoimmune.

Thank you everyone once again. I am Vit d deficient it all seems related . It's a mine field this hypothyroid, my endo reckoned being hypo rather that hyper was far easier to treat!! What a joke!! ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„

It's only an idea what about a dessert spoonful of honey first thing in the morning.

A good quality honey that is antibacterial. I use it if I have sinus problems and it does

work.

Thank you Bunnyjean that sounds an excellent idea. I would feel better using that rather than more medication I feel like I'm taking enough and it's getting more and more complicated ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Thank you to everyone for comments. I have attended Oral Surgery Clinic for sometime and no medication was prescribed for Lichen Planus in my mouth. I had private blood tests done and my Vit D levels are fine (I do take supplements). I do take honey most days (my husband keeps bees). I have to say that I really do not have any problem with the condition in my mouth but the ankle is a different matter. However, since applying steroid cream, there is a significant improvement

Once again, many thanks for the comments and blessings to you all

hello folks, I have been researching Lichens Sclerosus and came across this research about Lichen Planus. It is all a bit technical for me but basically, they seem to be suggesting that Histamine is involved in the reaction. I know there are diets that can be followed which control Histamine but I have no details. I thought it seems like a new avenue to explore and might be helpful. All the best sue_b.
