Lichen Planus - Autoimmune AIP & stopping Levothyroxine-

The amazing thing is I’ve just been to dentist & ive had autoimmune lichen Planus in my gums for years ( caused some say - by the Levothyroxine) I had to take - for Hashimotos- dentist says it’s completely gone ! Gums are clear !

That’s one year on autoimmune regime ( AIP) & changing to natural drugs ( Nature Throid )for thyroid 👏

I still have a long way to go & still have ups & downs - but that’s just one year after 24 awful ones on Levothyroxine-

The diet is hard to stick to at times - and I work in the food biz - always eating out etc - but it’s worth everything to have better improved health -

( I still get a swollen Lower lip & upper arms weakness & gritty eyes when working on screens & have to limit some things in the evenings etc and hair loss ) but I see this as a work in progress - I can’t change 25 years in a year - but I’m pleased with today’s dentist visit !

I’m so pleased for you! I’ve had oral lichen planus for over ten years. The hospital consultant said mine was probably caused by a large mercury dental filling. I have several smaller ones which he advised me to replace with white composite only as needed if the filling fractured or fell out.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism last autumn and was started on levothyroxine in October. I understood, perhaps mistakenly, that OLP would never go away completely but, like you, I have realised very recently that it does in fact appear to have cleared up😊. It will be interesting to see if my dentist agrees at my next appointment in December. The only thing I’ve done differently apart from taking levothyroxine is go gluten-free.

I really don’t know why it should have cleared up; am just grateful that it has!

Best wishes

Caroline

Being gluten free makes a huge difference & now I also avoid dairy & grains & SOY -boring but effective- I still get a sort of lumpy inner bottom lip 🙄 & it sometimes feels like it’s sunburnt - inflammation I suppose - yes I invested I. Having all my mercury removed at a dentist in Kent that specialises in safe removal -

Perhaps that's it then - going gluten-free may well be the answer in my case!

Despite what the hospital consultant said, I would like to have had the fillings removed but, as you say, it's vital to have them removed safely and I really am not happy in the dentist's chair😢. I do have a new dentist now though and she's lovely but I think I'm too much of a coward to go ahead and have them removed. It would be good if they fell out, making replacement necessary. Incredible really that it was ever deemed sensible to put mercury in our mouths!!

I am glad that you are doing better and that your lichen planus has cleared up. I hope you continue to make good progress.

Best wishes

Hi Avidreader,

So pleased you are feeling better after a whopping 24 years! I have been AIP since May this year (diagnosed hypo May 2017) and my improvements were huge within a couple of weeks. I still have the odd up and down but generally I am on a definite upward trend. Like so many on this forum - the 5 different doctors I have tried at my surgery are ignorant to and disinterested in hashimotos and as a result I have had a private blood test done through medi checks to establish that I have hashis so I can tackle it as an autoimmune disorder and of course learnt loads from this forum!

I am going to have another test done in the next month or so to compare antibody results. Have you compared your blood results from before and after? I am still on levo (125mg per day) but am interested in trying NDT. Do you put your wellness down to AIP or NDT or both - did you start them at the same time?

AIP is a heck of a lifestyle change but like you I have found it to be well worth the effort! They are starting a clinical trial in the US - so I am watching to see what the study brings as at the moment the evidence is anecdotal.

Very best wishes to you x
