Is it possible i have dumping syndrome despite having not had gastric surgery?
I am very lightheaded and dizzy and faint when eating - this can happen within minutes of eating and I feel I am going to faint! I often then feel weak, sleepy, faint, dizzy thereafter some hours later.
I see you have low B12. Not a surprise if everything's going straight through, so to speak... Poor you. Horrible.
Does it matter what you eat? Does it always happen - or is there a link to the type of food you've eaten.
Could be that you're gluten intolerant or have Coeliac Disease. Or that you're lactose intolerant. Etc. Maybe keep a food diary for a bit, see if you can spot a pattern?
When you say 'unstable blood sugar' what do you mean by this? It certainly sounds very plausible to me . . . but can this cause such sudden dizziness around eating/meal times?
If your blood sugar is like a roller-coaster, you could be having all sorts of symptoms. I am hypoglycemic and have those kinds of symptoms if I DON'T eat or don't eat plenty of protein (low blood sugar). You really should have your doc ck you for diabetes (high blood sugar). High sugar can be doing a lot of damage if ignored for too long.
If I eat too many carbs and not enough protein to 'buffer' the carbs, I will get shaky, sicky feeling, hot, flushy... want to stick my head in the freezer..lol.. This happens after eating something like pancakes with syrup for instance. If I eat a couple of eggs and some bacon with that same meal, I will probably be fine.
If I wait too long before eating, the symptoms aren't as strong but more a sicky, unwell feeling.
As long as I eat 'balanced'; not too many carbs/plenty of protein, I have no symptoms and feel fine. Also eating smaller meals during the day instead of just 2 - 3 large meals can be helpful.
A good book on eating 'balanced' is Entering the Zone by Dr. Barry Sears. I think you can get it used on Ebay and ck Amazon.
I can only tell you how my son was to see if it relates to you. From birth difficult to feed. Easily sick. As he grew older we realised something was wrong as he went to sleep after eating. Sometimes for 2 hours. He couldn't help it. We finally heard of a consultant and got a referral. Tested for food allergies and found out he was allergic to benzoic acid. This is in many foods. When he ate anything with benzoic acid in it his white blood cells flooded his body. With very uncomfortable side effects. A Stone Age diet helped to see what was the best food to eat that didn't contain benzoic. Consultant said males get better when they age and females get worse with symptoms. Hope you find if you are allergic and what it is that gets you. Val
I have rapid gastric emptying, not sure if same as dumping syndrome. Within minutes of eating something I am rushing to the loo. Sorry if I can't be more helpful.
I am sorry to hear you have dumping syndrome. I have heard of it but I have not had gastric surgery and you usually get dumping syndrome after surgery. Have you had surgery?
Hi Cb, No idea about dumping syndrom but I've been feeling very similar to you for the last few days, but the weakness comes over me just before eating as well as during and after the meal. Having read the reply to you about benzoic acid I'm wondering if that's the cause, I've been eating berries (which apparently contain it) and drinking orange juice and wonder if I nibbled some berries as I was washing them. Do you think this could be the answer?
Like you, blood tests all come back fine. Yesterday I felt so weak and faint I fetched the landline and kept it within reach as I really thought I might be falling unconscious! May I follow you to see what other suggestions people have?
Of course, please follow me. I am having ALL sorts tested now to see and most have to be done privately which is costing me so much money! The NHS will only pay for certain tests so I have to pay privately.
What is your situation? Symptoms etc.?

Hi Cb, Have you found any answers to your symptoms? I'm going in to the doctor for the second time today due to similar symptoms and I'm starting to think this may be the cause. Would love to hear what you've learned.
Hello, my GP suggested today i might have dumping syndrome eventhough i have never had gastric surgery. I have Parkinson's disease and became very constipated recently and started to experience horrible symptoms whilst sitting on the loo (always after evening meal) pins and needles in feet, then feet and legs go number, feelng creeps up my body and i was sure i was going to pass out. Well now the symptoms are occuring about 1/2hour to 3/4 hour after eating my evening meal (doesn't happen with a very small b'fast and very small lunch) - i get a feeling around my middle chest like teh food i have eaten has got stuck, then i get a weird feeling in my stomach and then teh shaking starts, numbness in my legs, can't stand up, feel light headed and like i am going to pass out and shake all over, heart starts racing, breathing becomes very shallow and i start hyperventilating. I have to go and lie down until it passes (about an hour). It seems to fit the symptoms of dumping syndrome but why would I be getting it when i haven't had surgery????? This nearly always occurs after my evening meal which is the main meal of the day - and i have been making them smaller and smaller to try and limit the impact but soon i won't be eating anythng!! I was 8 stone before this started and am now down to 7 1/2 stone as i am hardly eating anything. Will have to look into the Benzoic Acid scenario.
It is possible you have dumping syndrome. The same thing happened to me, for 2 months i didnt know what was happening to me or why i felt this way after eating, It drove me insane. I had alot of tests done . i had a glucose test done, where they take your blood glucose during fasting, then 1 hrs after consuming glucose and then another 2 hours after that to see how your body is responding to a sugary meal. I didnt understand why dumping syndrome happens to people who havent had surgery. But when i showed my doctor my results and explained my symptoms, He said it is dumping syndrome and it can happen without surgery. Im taking glucobay to help slow the absorption of carbohydrates in the intestines and its been helping me control my blood sugar levels, also been having smaller meals and less carbs. I advise you to do the same test and see a doctor and figure out if its dumping syndrome, but yes it can happen even without surgery. Hope i could help
