Is it advisable to try to get doctor to test these before start supplementing? Or is it ok to just start these without knowing your levels?

Test selenium, zinc and magnesium?
Hi well personally I am supplementing selenium since it helps thyroid function and also because my selenium level is quite low. I supplement magnesium as well since I get spasms and cramps in my hands and legs. My magnesium has come back low in range and GP says it is not a reliable test. But I am glad I supplement it as a spray and I can tell that it works because it makes my skin all tingly! Not sure about zinc I am afraid, I don't supplement it but have had it tested both in blood and a "taste test" - chewing a zinc tablet - no taste to the tablet means deficiency, I think if you get a strong taste of zinc that means your levels are fine.
I was told there was no point in testing magnesium as the body doesn't retain it but my GP did test it. If you have severe kidney dysfunction you should not take any supplement without your doctors advice. People who are generally in good health but hypothyroid seem to find it helpful to supplement these. I'm not sure your doctor would test them but worth asking. You could ask your doctor what your kidney and liver function is for reassurance.
