How do people take their cynomel? Chew or swallow?
Cynomel: How do people take their cynomel? Chew... - Thyroid UK
Cynomel
Smotv80,
For maximum absorption Cynomel (T3) should be swallowed with water 1 hour before, or 2 hours after, food and drink, 2 hours away from other medication and supplements, and 4 hours away from calcium, iron, vitamin D supplements, magnesium and oestrogen.
Definitely dissolve in the mouth for maximum effect. Swallowing mixes it with stomach acid which inhibits the action. Its also the quickest way to get the T3 into the blood and you don't need to carry water around with you if you are multi dosing or worry about taking an hour before food or any other supplements.

Heathermr,
There is no point in responding to me. We've had this discussion before and I disagree with you because all thyroid medication is designed to be swallowed and dissolved in the gut because the T4 and T3 molecules in thyroid medication are too large to be absorbed sublingually.
I suggest you talk to a reputable Biochemist who will confirm that T3 will slip easily into the blood stream sublingually. The reason that the medication is supposed to be swallowed is so that it absorbs only slowly into the blood stream to avoid spikes. However what they don't tell you is that some is absorbed too much by the stomach acid and hence you loose some effectiveness.
Heather
Heathermr,
I suggest you substantiate what you are saying by posting supporting links to show that T3 will slip easily into the blood stream sublingually.
Dr P recommended taking it sublingually, whether liothyronine or NDT.
Thank you BootsOn, but until I see research saying it is as effective or more effective than swallowing with water I shall continue to recommend it is taken with water, not sublingually.
And I will continue to take it sublingually - for me the proof is that it works for me, whatever research studies say
BootsOn,
Of course, whatever works for you is right
And that is what we should be recommending to people, to try different ways and see what works for them.
Levo, NDT, T3
Low carb, not low carb, low fat, etc etc etc
There is no "one size fits all".
BootsOn,
I won't recommend methods I don't believe in but others are free to advise as they see fit.
Just out of curiosity, have you tried your thyroid med sublingually?
Do you let yours dissolve under the tongue? And what difference have you felt from taking it that way instead of swallowing it?
BootsOn,
No, it works fine for me swallowed with water.
I don't need supporting links as my husband is a Biochemist who has worked with Pharmaceutical companies and Universities and the human body. His comment is that the cells of the stomach are the same as the ones in your mouth so why should there be any difference on how the medication passes through! I can feel the difference when i dissolve the medication in my mouth giving me the energy to get up and go.
Others deserve the chance to make their own minds up what works for them.
Heather
We do need them.
Why? Having worked in a Pharmaceutical environment all of his life, my husband knows the problems with "adjusting the data" to show what you want in studies. Its all about funding at the end of the day. A manufacturer and doctors will always err on the cautious side and follow what they are told to do by whoever is paying the money. What counts is real life and a desire to live as well as YOU can. All I am trying to do is to get people to think outside the box and try a method of taking medication that might work for them.
Heather
So when I wish to tell someone else, I have to say something like this:
Well someone on the internet said somewhere that her husband said that cells in mouth are the same as cells in stomach.
I don't think that really supports your claim, or anyone asking about the idea.
Heathermr,
You replied to me. If I'm to be convinced I do need to see the supporting documentation. Others can take your word for it, or not, as they please.
