Colonoscopy advise please

Hi.

Mine is booked in for 9 days time.

Specialist told me to stop my Iron tablets from today.

My questions are:

Will stopping Iron for 9/10 days make me slump?

Do I take my other supplements all the way thro? (B12, B complex, selinenium and Zinc and Vit C)

Do I take my levoroxine on the day of the procedure?

Thank you as always.

A few weeks ago you quoted the following results :

IRON 18.4 range 7.2-25.9

Ferritine 105 range 20-204

Those results are pretty good. You won't suffer by giving up iron for a couple of weeks. You might want to consider re-starting on a maintenance dose of iron after the colonoscopy, rather than a therapeutic dose.

I can't think of a reason for you to stop your other supplements, although I wouldn't take supplements on the day of the procedure, or the day before. You have to empty the gut and stop eating before the colonoscopy. Supplements on an empty stomach could well irritate the gut and might make you feel sick.

I think you could take your Levo as normal, with water, if it really worried you. But missing out one day's dose is not going to cause a problem in the long term. You could always miss a day and take a double dose the day after the colonoscopy.

Ok perfect! Thank you....

Yes your totally right they were my last Iron results so I've now dropped to taking just one 80mg tablet each night.

So after the procedure I will double up for a couple of weeks.

I think the fear of having a 'crash' drives me to be s little bit 'dull' about this.

Thank you humanbean as always x

I can understand that fear and sympathise/empathise with it completely!

Thanx u just looked at this.

I only take the Vit C as I understand it helps me with my iron so I will leave that as well now for ten days.

Thank you! X

Can I ask you for advise on Magnesium as well?

Sorry, this one totally blows my mind!

I took a magnesium citrate tablet, I swear I had a reaction to it and the next day it was like I was drugged on a sleeping tablet....didn't take it again!

Do I bought and used for a couple of weeks the skin spray....

I'm finding that really annoying, it's making my already dry skin even dryer and mostly it's frustrating me!!

How do I know what to take? And why?

Any advise?

Sorry....

I take magnesium citrate with no problems, but I know a few people have reported big problems with it.

You could try one of the magnesium supplements listed in these links :

naturalnews.com/046401_magn...

metabolics.com/blog/the-def...

globalhealingcenter.com/nat...

I think it is just trial and error, sorry. If you try another couple of different kinds of magnesium supplement and can't find something that works for you, I'd suggest giving up trying.

Just be aware of the symptoms of magnesium overdose :

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper...

If your kidneys struggle to eliminate excess magnesium then this could be the cause of the problem and you should stop taking magnesium immediately.

Ok so I need to get my magnesium levels checked before I stress myself over this?

Sorry I sound such a blooming fool ☹️

humanbean profile image
humanbean in reply toZuzka1

There is no point in testing magnesium. The serum test is very unreliable. If magnesium levels are low in the blood, magnesium is taken from the cells of the body and shoved in the blood. So levels always look fine.

You aren't a fool. Nobody knows this stuff by magic. :)

Ok so how do I know if I actually need it?!?! X

I'm not sure actually. Maybe greygoose knows?

I don't think there is any way of knowing. It's just taken for granted that most people are magnesium deficient, because soils are depleted by modern farming methods.

I agree with HB, it's all trial and error in this game. You just have to keep trying things until you find something that suits you, and makes you feel better.

Ok thank you. It's magnesium I'm really struggling to get to grips with 😬🔫

Zuzka1 I use the BetterYou Magnesium spray an find that if I use too much I feel quite drugged and sleepy the next day. 6 sprays on each shin/knees gives me a good nights sleep and helps painful knees.

I would recommend you question the team who will be performing this procedure about the sedatives and pain relief on offer. You may not need any, but if you do, ask specifically whether a) the sedative is contraindicated in hypothyroidism, and b) whether the pain relief given during the procedure is nitrous oxide, which will inactivate all B12 in your body.

I had a colonoscopy in 2013, before I joined HU (I was stuck on a rural dial-up connection until 2014!) and I didn't know that I should not have had either Midazolam, or the gas & air. I was in a bad way for a couple of months afterwards, I think due mainly to the B12 inactivation, as I have pernicious anaemia.

I am having a general anaesthetic. I'm in France and that's how they do things here.

No pain relief meds afterwards as I've been told I will not be in pain.

Just bloated...

Good luck with it. :-)

You are so lucky having a colonoscopy under a general anaesthetic. Depending on your past medical history they can be excruciating, yet in the UK they are usually done without full anaesthesia.

You can't do much about the bloating. Just remember that all the gas they pump into you has to come out somewhere. I'll let you guess where.

Zuzka1 profile image
Zuzka1 in reply tohumanbean

Gosh I've never viewed it like that but I'm so going too from today onwards!

I thought having a general was horrid! But pain is much worse! So thanx for spinning that on its head for me! Really it all feels better now!

And as for gas.....I'm not going to leave my house for a few days and I might suggest my husband goes away!

😳

Marz profile image
Marz in reply toZuzka1

If the anaesthetic contains NO then your B12 will be depleted. Do check 😊

Have had several colonoscopies - far eaier than barium meals and follow through and barium enemas. Last colonoscopy here in Crete was absolutely pain free after an injection I didn't feel either. 😊😊

Generally you have two options, one of which is "gas and air" (which is totally ineffective) but you have to have it unless someone can drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours. Otherwise you wil be given a sedative, but I don't know what it is as I couldn't fulfill the criteria for having it. That's how I know that gas and air is useless.

Hillwoman profile image
Hillwoman in reply toAngel_of_the_North

You're right, it is absolutely useless. In my case, I had midazolam as well, and that was also pointless. It didn't sedate me, just slurred my speech so that I couldn't communicate - or protest!

Angel_of_the_North profile image
Angel_of_the_North in reply toHillwoman

I had a complete meltdown and either heart rate or BP went up so high that they were begging me to tell them to stop the procedure - apparently they can't unless you ask them (so good thing I hadn't had midazolam). Then the report said "a couple of incidents of mild discomfort" pfft!

Hillwoman profile image
Hillwoman in reply toAngel_of_the_North

My report was almost identical. QE Hosp, Gateshead?

Edit: an unpleasant experience all round. Lucky French residents and their general anaesthetic!

Angel_of_the_North profile image
Angel_of_the_North in reply toHillwoman

Got it in one.

dinglebell profile image
dinglebell in reply toAngel_of_the_North

Yes I was begging them to stop as it was excruciating, I was crying, and on the notes it said 'mild to moderate pain'. I give uupWish they would just tell the truth. We should all be on the same side.

Zuzka1 profile image
Zuzka1 in reply todinglebell

Gosh sorry you had that 😢

Zuzka1 profile image
Zuzka1

Yes I agree. That's exctally what my specialist told me...

😊

Angel_of_the_North profile image
Angel_of_the_North in reply toZuzka1

During the prep you'll be "peeing through your bum" so anything you take is likely to be wasted (and you can only eat white or clear food).

humanbean profile image
humanbean in reply toAngel_of_the_North

OMG yes! And it doesn't half sting and burn!

Zuzka1 Before you start the prep, lather barrier cream for babies on your bum. And every time you go put more on.

I used Metanium Barrier Ointment that I bought from Boots. It was brilliant.

Hillwoman profile image

It's the nitrous oxide that affects B12. Midazolam can affect thyroid function. :-(

humanbean profile image
humanbean

When I mentioned the kidneys, I wasn't suggesting that magnesium would affect the kidneys. I was suggesting that without good kidney function the body can't eliminate excess magnesium and it can build up.
