Thyroid tests

Good morning. I'm from Jamaica. I did a total thyroidectomy in January 2016. I would like to know if I should get tested for FT3, FT4 & TSH. Doctors are saying that it is only necessary to test the TSH . Should this be so?

Ariyaboo,

No, TSH is a pituitary hormone and you need thyroid hormones (FT4 and FT3) tested too. TSH is useful for diagnosing primary hypothyroidism but once you are taking Levothyroxine you also need to check FT4 and FT3 levels are optimal.
