Hi I'm thinking if self medicating with NDT as no doctor will give a private prescription. What dose do I start with?

Thiele,

What are your recent TSH, FT4 and FT3 results and ranges and how much Levothyroxine are you taking?

I'm on no medication at all. My results have been the same for 12 years! My reason for thinking of taking NDT is that I don't want to suddenly develop extreme symptoms. I do have gut issues however and have recently found gluten and excess dairy to be a problem.

What are the results that haven't changed? I think it's important to know that before anyone could recommend a dose.

Ah right well I'll have to get copies of tests from my doc who by the way is not interested in discussing NDT. Thanks I'll get back to you

Thiele,

NDT isn't licensed for UK use. If your GP diagnoses hypothyroidism you will be prescribed Levothyroxine.

Thiele,

So what are your results and ranges?

Symptoms creep up on you as thyroid levels drop. You won't suddenly develop extreme symptoms.

I would get your labs first before self medicating. I had to do the same thing and buy some Thyroid-s as my doctor refused to prescribe NDT, or even look at any of my labs aside from my TSH level. I started at a half grain, and have been increasing by a half grain every 10-14 days, depending on how I'm feeling.

Right now I'm only on 1 full grain, but I may increase to 1 1/2 grain in a few days. Once I get to 2 or 3 grains I will get my labs done again.

I started on a 1/4 grain, & increased every two weeks. 1 grain seemed alright for a few months, then my symptoms crept back in, so I increased slowly to 2 grains. My morning temperature went up from 35.1 to 36.1/36.3 degrees celcius, after several months on this dose, & being more careful with my diet & supplements.

Thanks that's helpful. I'm getting readings from my doc and I'll take it from there.
